It has become one of life's mysteries. It seems to come alive after 9:30 PM EDT. However, it's alive time, even at night, tends to vary.

I normally don't log on at night. This is the first time I've seen the site up during the day in about a month

I got a different error message about an hour ago and not the Error 500 that was appearing before.

I suspect that there are other things going on, as well: I've noticed that "no new posts" is often displayed for a forum, yet upon opening it, there are indeed new posts.
A minor problem, though, compared to not being able to access it at all.

My observation is that for the last 2+ months, the website is not available until around 11 PM US Eastern time and it's gone by the next morning.  Most of the activity on the forums seems to be from US amateurs and given the aging population that means most board members are already in bed at that time or close to it.  All of this serves to discourage board use and that is evidenced by only a couple of users being online when the web site is actually up, as well as the lack of activity over the last couple of months. It's a downward spiral.

The web page mentions that it is "Powered by SMF 1.1" which appears to be a 20-year-old piece of software that is no longer supported i.e. no bug fixes, no security fixes and it "Requires the latest version of Adobe Flash Player"  Roll Eyes. There is also a reference to the mkportal.it website which is currently promoting Italian dental implants.

All of this is bad news and would tend to convince the casual observer that this website is, for all intents and purposes ... dead.

Making AM GREAT Again!

Sam really hits the nail on the head with his comments.

Coupled with utter zero coherent response from anyone with an admin title and one really gets the impression that this was fun for awhile and now its not.  So its not being supported much.

Typically having hours shaved down and / or bandwidth throttling is indicative of hosting bills needing attention.

Here's to hoping AMFone continues on.

Wow, this is mind blowing! a web site that only works at night. go figure. If its a matter of money I would be willing to throw a couple bucks in for a upgrade or whatever but until then will just live with it.
Got on that other "Big" ham site but just not the same as this place.

I can't understand her due to the multi-voice and reverberation. It's like the DNR on my Yaesu is turned on.

if you want to talk about dead web sites LOL. hey this one aint dead yet.

...Adobe Flash Player"... is there a trustworthy replacement for that, without trojans and spyware built in? It's not important but I miss occasionally playing great games like "Bin Laden Liquors" and "Pie Bill Gates". Sure I have some Player install kits off of various software packages but as soon as they are installed, they phone home and are deleted via "update".
A side-comment about Flash for sure, but the day may come when more and more people use a separate computer for their important stuff, and it's air-gapped from the web to avoid such rudeness and interference/spying, etc.. They will use a simple dumb pc for email and web, having minimal personal info as well as the required TPM module.

Mauldroppers was shutdown about a year ago. It too had old software and maybe some support issues. The reported reason was having only a few active users and the part of the software that added new users was broken, no one was able to fix it. So much was lost.

Due to stage of life, I quit/junked all the typical social media sites as the content has been found wanting. That is being very kind as those sites are complete time wasting garbage. Except for the cat videos/pictures and the "Fat Orange Cat" cartoons. Their data collection is however second to none LOL. facebook, reddit, all the rest. Have not tried twitter or X but not interested in wasting the time and will not comply.

Sites like Amfone which cater specifically to one special interest or another are more frequently visited by myself and hopefully by many others who appreciate their qualities.

One thing in particular is decent moderation on a manageable system to keep things close to the topic and avoid huge discussions of annoying nonsense. As opposed to garbage ai/bot moderation.

This kind of site also does not send unwanted emails, share data, spy, or ram ads down visitors' throats.

These reasons (IMHO) are why amfone and others like it are much better than 'simply a group' on some massive social media site. I hope this one and others structured like it will be around for a long time.
