I remember there was a topic last year in regards to the Super Bowl halftime show and this year they announced it would be the Black Eyed Peas for the 2011 show.

Seems to me I recall mentioning something about having worthless acts and didn’t I mention the Black Eyed Peas as being one of those. Who votes for this stuff?  Do the networks actually call the public and do surveys?

I say bring on more of the old geezers. They already had the number 1 greatest live band of all time and last year they had the second greatest live band so I would have voted for the 3 greatest live band. Maybe its just me Roll Eyes

Amen, Brother.

I don't watch sports, but sometimes check out these big events.

When I see these useless groups performing, I sometimes wonder what the rest of the world is thinking. Here is the USA, a high profile country beaming this awful crap around the world as a representation of our best entertainment.  Some of the rap and other screaming is sheer embarassment.

In terms of radio-minded people like us, think of all the power, studio equipment, jobs, money and infrastructure wasted to beam this stuff around the whirl.

Then the football games. What a waste of energy all year long. Just think of how many bridges, buildings, roads could be built - and acres of crops grown by all these healthy players and couch potato fans.  HA!!

Or maybe it's, "Hey, we're the USA - we're in your face - like it or not."  I can appreciate that attitude.

[/rant]

I must be turning into an OB. Brrrr.. time for a nap.

Neil can go back to Canada eh?  Wink

On another note, to those of us who do watch sports, what's with these crappy grunge bands they play whilst running highlights? I know I'm out of touch but I also know that there are like-minded people wondering the same thing. They can drop that sheiβen any time.

Maybe greatest studio band. I don't think those guys could play live with all those special effects, overdubbing and track layering.

I may be required to attend the SB. I would rather be somewhere else doing something else. ATV riding, working on a radio set, changing a light bulb..

I dunno Steve. I saw them doing their "Animals" concert and it was very impressive. Of course I might have been effected by 'outside influences' during that time.  Wink

Anyone for 'Pigs On A Wing'?

Listened to Animals tape every Monday morning going up the CA 405 rat race.
Sometimes I would sing along.

Sure they did it. But not very often. How many times did they tour? And how many dates were on the tour(s)? Compare and contrast this number to that of the Stones or the Dead.

I can't argue with you on that point Steve. However, The Wall was a pretty good tour although I missed it. When I got station out in Mare Island, CA back in 1981, I was waiting for a bus at Oakland when I looked out side the bus station. There was a black & white poster with a red rose on it with that date, (the day I was there), and time on it. I kicked myself in the arse for not getting to CA earlier. I did eventually see them at the 'Benefit for Vietnam Vets' concert.

Frank, I got my son hooked on Ummagumma's 'Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With A Pict' tune.

I'll admit my bias for "good" live bands are ones that don't use a bunch of gadgets, magic boxes, massive overdubs and layering in the studio, and ones that can jam (but still be tight) and don't play the song the same (as the studio recording) every time. The lights, smoke and all that other stuff are fluff. But that's my bias.

Thinking back here's some of the more memorable performances I've seen - some solo performers:

Chambers Brothers at UConn  - (Time has come)

Mahavisnu Orchestra

Stevie Wonder

Wayne Newton in Las Vegas  (Don't laugh - he was great)

Johnny Mathis in Las Vegas   (Another big surprise - his version of "Brazil" is outstanding)

Blood Sweat and Tears

And:
The Beatles playing at a private JJ Magical Mystery Tour house party - '69

Led Zepplin playing at a private JJ acid house party -  '72

 Wink

I hate being an old fuddy-duddy but the last time I checked this was
the AM Forum > AM BULLETIN BOARD...

What does this thread (Super Bowl Show 2011) have to do with AM radio?

From the QSO section description.

QSO
The QSO area is for any subject except political and religious posts. It is like the AM Bar and Grill and of course anything that is posted must be following the guidelines.

Any subject is probably too broad. But this section has always included reasonable non-radio and non-AM topics. I guess we can argue about what is reasonable.  Cheesy

I'm surprised any of us can hear anything what with the various lists of loud bands we saw.

I stumbled upon the speaker system decommissioned from the Filmore Auditorium in San Francisco gathering dust unceremoniously in a Mountain View warehouse.  I probably lost 6 dB to those huge beasts, maybe more.  They should be in a museum somewhere or bronzed.  Huge, though.  Those things were huge.

This thread got me reminiscing.

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles at Leo's Casino in Cleveland back in 64' or 65' - $2.00 to get in.

Joe Walsh and the James Gang at the Kent State University student Union back in 1968 or 1969 - free concert.

Gordon Lightfoot acoustical concert @ Cleveland's Music Hall - early 70's

Linda Ronstadt - torch music era.  1974 - Cleveland.

Ton Petty & The Heartbreakers in their prime @ Cincinnati's Riverbend late 80's.

Bob Dylan - vocally well past his prime but the best live band I've ever heard - Tupelo, MS convention center about 7 years ago.

Pink Floyd

I saw Roger Waters do the Wall on October 24th at the Palace. Two tickets for just under 500.00 and 60.00 a piece for shirts. But it was a great show and it was worth the money. On Thanksgiving Day I went to go watch the Lions loose for 98.00 dollars a ticket and $ 30.00 parking. At least Kid Rock was good.

Ticket prices for the shows have really went out of sight in the past 5-10 years. First time I saw Van Halen in '81, my ticket was $9.50 and the tee shirt about $8. I did break down and see them on their last "reunion" tour and the tickets were round $90 each, but it was pretty good. I had told my friends back in the late '80's that if they ever got back together with DLR that there would be no way I'd miss it. When the tour was announced, there were people I hadn't seen in nearly 20 years coming up to me and asking, "So you ARE going, right?". I had to save face.

I think the small venues/bars have some of the best shows. Here locally in the clubs over the years, I've seen Blackfoot, Pat Travers, and Ace Frehley; all really good. One of the best was Motorhead back in '94 at Ziggy's.

Not too many great old bands left around for a SB halftime guess ... maybe Grand Funk? Never got to see them live.
