Here is an e-mail received from Dave/W6PSS:
Dear Friends of Ashtabula Bill,
Following email comments from Bill's XYL Sylvia:
"Anyway Bill's surgery is scheduled for Sept 18th. He will go in the day before. So rev up the prayer engine ha ha. Haven't contacted anyone else with the particulars as nothing was going to happen til then. He is doing ok but having some neck pain, which he never had before but did take him in to va when I could not relieve it with the usual heat massage etc etc. They took an xray of his neck and said the bones at the top of his spine are deteriorated but nothing they can do as it is pretty much age related. The pain he is having is muscle spasm. It was feeling ok and today he woke up with it again so is sitting on couch with heat, muscle relaxing pills etc."
Sylvia's holding up quite well although she's quite concerned. It's fortunate she's a retired Nurse. This might be an excellent time to show our support with cards, letters, prayers and good wishes.  He's contributed so much to that phase of Amateur Radio we hold so dear - AM.   AM FOREVER!

W9AD,--Dave,
Was wondering if you might have heard if Bill had his surgery, and if so,-- how is he doing?
Worked him a couple of months ago on 40 meter AM.

Hi Rene,
I just received an e-mail from Sylvia with the following:

Well he is home and in his recliner having a nap. Feels well tho a bit weak and short of breath, nothing now but recovery ahead. Be a few days before he can navigate the stairs to the basement and get on the air but I'm sure it won't be long. Thanks to all for prayers and good thoughts. Love Sylvia

Dear Friends of "Ashtabule Bill"  W8VYZ,
It's over!  Bill sailed through operation this  morning with no
complications. Here's a full report from BIll's XYL  Sylvia:
"Well it is all over and  went swimmingly. We got him settled in yesterday
and went to the VA shortly  after 6 a.m. so we could ride down on the elevator
with him to the OR. It took  several hrs to do the surgery and he had an
epidural block so he was awake  throughout. They finished about 10:30 and they
called us to let us know he did  well, and we got to see him about 1. He was alert
and no pain only a bit  chilled. Then we went to eat and went back to see him
again (he is in ICU) They  will keep him in ICU til tomorrow to keep a close
eye on him and will probably  return him to a regular room tomorrow and then he
will probably come home  sometime on the weekend. They have an excellent
vascular team there and are very  good about explaining procedures and answering
questions you might have. My  daughter stayed with me all day yesterday and all
day today. I slept at their  house last night and then when we went back
there this aft we both fell into bed  for a nap for an hour or so, and then I came
on home as my poor cat would wonder  where I was (more likely where the food
bag was ha ha) I will not go tomorrow,  but my daughter and her husband will
go in to see him tomorrow and get him any  thing he might need. Don't know what
I would do without them. My other daughter  had to work and could not go but
sent love and hugs and kisses with him. My son  had to work to but I'm sure
they will get over on the weekend to see him when he  gets home. Luckily the one
daughter is a partner in her accounting firm, so can  take time off when need
be. You are right our kids our our treasures on earth.I  am so glad they and
the grandkids are close by. It is so much fun to watch them  and the great
grands grow and flourish. Well am going to eat some leftover chili  and fall into
bed then tomorrow will get ready for the grand homecoming. He will  not have
anything to eat today, just liquids and did not have anything much  yesterday
so will be ready for the fatted calf when he comes home Love  Sylvia"
Very pleased to share this with Bill's many friends.   Please pass the word
along.  You may wish to address cards his home QTH  rather than VA Hosp because
he'll return Ashtabula this weekend ahead  of mail. You may also email via

Dave, Gary, Herb, and all,

Great to hear ol Bill is doing FB and may be back on the air in the near future.
Ol Bill is quite a guy,--while he never had much "patience" for SSB, he always had patience for low power AM.
He is "one of a kind", a real gentleman from the "old school".

Aren't we all.  This is great news and a relief to hear that so far everything is going so well.  We'll all look forward to hearing him back on the air soon.

Ain't a aneurysm in North America can bother him!

I heard Bill this morning on 7290 (he sure was running a lot of clipping).  But, he signed from his QSO, and went QRT before I could get the rig ready to go.

Get your kids to draw your shack and QTH and mail them. Ragchew
QSLs are better than DX QSLs, but all QSLs are DX when you`re old.
