I unfortunately received this sad news this morning in an email which I have copied below.

Lets us all take moment to include Bill in our prayers.

Quote
Dear Andy, Joe, Skip, Ray, Tim, Brent and Gary -

Sending this to you knowing your commitment and passion to our beloved AM mode of operation.  Please give this wide dissemination as you deem appropriate.
Most of you have worked or heard of the legendary "Ashtabula Bill" W8VYZ. This icon of AM has been an intrepid supporter of AM dating back to before those days when a growing number of SSB buffs wrote off AM as an outdated mode utilized by only a few hayseeds.  Along with Bill, You can each take great pride in proving them wrong!

News from Bill's dear XYL Sylvia reveals that Bill has suffered a recent aneurysm.  He's been in the Cleveland VA Hospital undergoing tests since Monday.  Pre-Op tests will continue a few days prior to aortic aneurysm surgery next week. Bill is eating regularly and in touch with family members.   From what Sylvia has read, post-op recovery is a fairly long period.  Although she was a career Nurse, she can't predict how long til he can climb those ham shack stairs.  On our only visit, Sylvia cautioned  "Many have ventured down those stairs but they haven't all returned!"  She's grateful their 14-year old grandson can help with mowing the huge lawn until Bill's recovery.

Bill's biggest risk with surgery is his poor lung function. "We'll know more when all the testing is completed and will update you on time of surgery."

Sylvia authorized release this information.  Will advise surgery date when received and we can adjust our prayers accordingly.  Will pass along any contact information as advised.  Thanks!

Best 73,
w6pss

Let there be no aneurysm that can take him out.

Thank you David for the news.

The fact that he even survived this long after having it says a lot about his strength. It tends to be a deadly condition, as in - once you know you've got it, you're done.

Last time I spoke with him he did sound weak, but was going out to fire up the 'big' tractor to do some plowing. He's one of those 'Never say quit/Never say die' types.

Hopefully we'll hear him back on the airwaves soon. Thanks for forwarding this info, Gary.

Heard him on 40 a couple weeks ago. He was calling CQ and some slopbuckets came on the same frequency. Bill gave them what-for. "Whats wrong with you, ya deaf, cant hear?"

Hope he gets better. I always stop spinning the VFO when I come across his signal.

My sincere best wishes to Bill. I visited with him in 1998.     I too suffered a trauma to my aorta, a dissection.   An aortic aneurysm is not as bad, but it's still bad enough.

Get well soon, Bill, we need ya!

I had a very enjoyable QSO with Bill on 40m less that 2 weeks ago.

I have noticed for quite some time that his voice has been taking on that "elderly person's" sound, but he has always been optimistic enough to talk about future plans.  This time he mentioned something about improving his audio for this winter's upcoming season.

Maybe it would cheer him up if we all sent him get-well cards.  Perhaps someone who lives nearby could get his hospital mailing address from his XYL, or they could be sent to his home address.

I haven't heard Dave for a while either, but that's not unusual for this time of the year.

Quote
Great News -
Ashtabula Bill has passed all his pre-op tests and was released from Cleveland VA Hospital this afternoon & will remain home until firm date  surgery - within next 2 weeks.  Sylvia, Bill & family very appreciative your prayers & thoughtful comments appearing in "Amfone" - a very fine vehicle indeed Gary. They were greeted with emails containing these comments  when they arrived home this evening.  We belong to a fine fraternity folks.
Surgery will be performed downtown Cleveland facility - address & phone in
"amfone" correct.  If you don't hear Bill on-air soon,  Ashtabula L/L is (440) 224-1787.  Thanks each of you disseminating info on Bill.
