..well don, "the world series" has nothing to do with this world, but the long defunct newspaper, the new york world.  they donated the first trophy, and idea for a championship between the american, and national leagues in baseball. so in a way, it is "the world series"...
i've heard this in other sports, nfl football, nba basketball etc. the longest running  team championships in north america are, the grey cup, (canadian football), the stanley cup, (nhl hockey), and the world series. the nba, and nfl championships are relative new-comers....tim..sk...

This one is especially for "Thom" Grin Grin One thing that you have to keep in mind is that when I was in elementary school, I was the short, fat, little wop kid that no one wanted on their team. As I grew into my mid teans, I became a huge strapping monster!! And my favorite school pastime was beating the hell out of the "jocks" and other "beautiful people". Revenge was sweet!! Grin Grin So now in my adulthood I have absolutely no use for overpaid, underinteligent "professional athleets.

Nobody wanted me on their team either, until they figured out I could run.

Until one game when I was taking a handoff, saw a hole in the line, and ran through it. Two defensive backs saw the hole at the same time I did, and went to close it.

One hit my thigh heading left-to-right, the other hit my shin heading right-to-left.

Everyone on the field heard a very loud POP.

I lay on the ground in what I thought was the most intense pain I'd ever felt, until those same two guys grabbed me, one by the shoulders and one by the ankle, "three, two, one... " and reset my knee.

To this day I walk with a bit of a limp if the weather's bad, or a real bad limp if I put my wheight on it wrong.

I'm not sure what part of that makes me "unintelligent" or "beautiful", but I'm sure you'll straighten me out.

AMEN, how many other sports do the fans ever get the chance to influence management decisions?

I dunno, is "American Idol" a sport?

HUH. I don't think so. NASCAR is ruled with an iron fist by the France family.

NASCAR is nowhere near the biggest spectator sport. Soccer beats it by a mile, and that's just counting the fans in India.

The TV ratings for NASCAR are already starting to drop. I've think we've seen the peak of NASCAR. It just doesn't have much to offer for the long term, especially with the homogeous product it's morphed into

All sports take fan input in one way or another. Baseball and basketball (IIRC) have their all-star teams elected by the fans. Polls, fan nights/games, weekends, clubs, are some of the other ways. What it all amounts to in the end is not clear to me. The ultimate input is the ticket.

Yes, soccer fans make football fans look tame.
