AF6IM jumping from a C54G, 1999 Quincy Illinois.

« on: September 16, 2015, 02:34:45 PM »

Will be jumping on Sunday Sept 20 at Byron CA carrying a Yaesu FT 817 and 10M end fed dipole trailing wire antenna. Will be making SSB QSOs under open canopy starting at about 12,000 ft. If there is interest I'll make some AM QSOs too. Should work line of sight contacts and who knows, maybe further if conditions permit.

We have little control over scheduling as experienced jumpers pay $22 per jump and tandem jumpers pay over $200.  http://bayareaskydiving.com/?gclid=CIOpi4G_xMUCFU9ffgodP4UACA   Guess who gets boarding priority?

We will have unique QSL cards for this event, our 21st Parachute Mobile mission. www.parachutemobile.com

Check website above for spot freq and jump time updates. Our AM spot is planned for 29.025 MHz. Will have a base station at the drop zone operating SSB at 28.425MHz. If you wish to work me on AM 29.025 contact me first on 28.425 SSB and request a switch over after I finish the 28.425 traffic.

Will try to get some jumps in between 10 and noon CA time. Will jump all day if winds permit. With our big radio jump canopies (210 sq ft) landing in winds above 15 knots is dicey. We use big canopies for these jumps due to gear weight and the desire for long hang times.

Jump from 13,500 ft was successful, 12 10M QSOs during descent. Sadly no AM takers. Will try again on Oct 17 2015. Hope at least a couple of SF Bay Area AM ops will work me. If you are interested lets set it up in advance. Email me at af6im@arrl.net. Can operate 10 20 and 40 from under canopy.

Here is an audio track from last Sundays jump. First portion is from my carried audio recorder. It diode demodulated my transmitted sig which is donald ducky, but receive sigs are clear. Later portion is 2M FM recorded at dropzone.

It's a thrill to make HF QSOs from aloft. Best DX was N6SN who was mobile near Big Sur CA, about 110 miles from Byron CA DZ.
