Wow, this one is a shocker! John and almost countless others have spent time with John either on air, or in person with him. I had the pleasure of both. I don't know how to describe John in just a few words but anyone who knew him would have to realize that his brain was a factory. There was always something going on with John. In the past two years, John kind of disappeared from HF and the story he gave me made no sense. He stated that he didn't have a HF antenna  up even though he had a 160 foot tower.He put that up about six years ago to replace a shorter one and had HF antennas on it. He was heard on VHF & UHF and was quite regular on what we call the 06 machine around here. 147.060 Albany area. If you Google his call you will find his web sites that have a lot of good information on them. Better grab what you can as who knows how long the sites will stay up?

I'm sorry to hear this. I had a number of chats with John on 160 m. Those were always interesting and a far cry from the stereotypical "The rig is...the weather is...my age is..." conversations that dominate our bands.

I don't believe I ever talked to John on the air, but I certainly heard him from time to time.  Based on the QSO's I listened into, he was a interesting individual. 

Hopefully he enjoyed his life and accomplished the things that were important to him.

Yes indeed - talking to John or 'Red' as he use to be known, was never dull. He was indeed a very bright guy and like many others, I spent countless hours listening to him in QSO over the years, as well as working him regularly back home. He fell in with a nitwit not far from where I lived in VT who had lost his license previously for jamming, so I steered clear after that but still listened to him from time to time. John was another of the old New England fixtures on AM like GAC and others with good, clear signals who were on regularly. You couldn't spend time on the air and not run into him at some point. He did a lot of listening, too.

May his travels to the outer galaxies be as interesting as his conversations on 75m were.

So weird and strange, I was *thinking* of him just a few days back. Not sure what triggered the thought locally, something I picked up or was looking at. Maybe even his callsign on an old piece of paper.

I recall he was taking care of his mother quite a bit - and that she was somewhat elderly. I got the sense that he fully expected to be around as long as she and his father had been, or were (i don't know the details).

He certainly had theories... ideas...

...he posted some pix of him up on that big tall tower a few years back, and then after that I don't recall hearing him on too often.

Never made it to the southern corner of Vt to do an eyeball.
Thought that might be quite something to do.

I'm saddened to hear of John passing away.

He helped me with getting my Valiant going and sounding good back in the early 80s, with his encouraging and engaging manner. He had a wealth of knowledge to share with anyone who might ask. Rest in peace.

Sad news,  Talked to John a few times on 75.  Listened to him often - especially enjoyed his
gentle sparring with Irb W2VJZ.  Always an intersting if challenging QSO, as he would often pepper the qsos with not so subtle technical barbs or some esoteric reference.  Defintely a unique character with an imaginative approach to radio.

John Davis Shaw 70, of Stamford,VT. died Thursday January 2, 2014 at his home. He was born in Ann Arbor Michigan on August 3, 1943 a son of Marion (Davis) Shaw and the late Alex J. Shaw. He attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from Williston Academy. He was veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967. He enjoyed working with computers and HAM Radios. Survivors include his mother Marion Shaw of Williamstown, MA. and several cousins and an aunt.  Yes I too noticed that John was not sounding "up to snuff"
the last few times i talked to him, his mind was still sharp as heck though.

 John was an interesting person, not boring most of the time,
but at times he talked about stuff, I had no clue about.
I shall miss talking to him and seeing him at the local Hamfests.

Life is short, try to be nice to others and have some fun while you are here.
