I have had great success with my Gates BC-1T transmitter on 160m, so when the opportunity to acquire another popped up I went for it. A second transmitter solves my indecision on how to bandswitch the BC-1T - the first rig can stay on 160 and the new on can end up on 75m!
I'm nearly done with the initial cleaning and restoration of this second rig and have brought it up on the original 1400 kHz. Unfortunately within a few moments of plate-on the filament transformer for the 833s failed with shorted turns in the primary. I believe this might have been due to a loose ground at the bottom of the PA cathode metering and overload circuit.
This transformer has a 230 VAC primary (actually two 115 VAC windings in series) and three secondaries, all center-tapped. Two secondaries provide 10v at 10 amps (modulators) and one 10v at 20 amps (RF PA).
Hearing my tale of woe, a friend has passed along to me a heavy box of Chicago Standard transformers that were pulled from a derelict Gates BC-1F. Does anyone have a Chicago Standard catalog or the manual for the BC-1F that would help me identify the applications for these transformers? They all look like filament transformers, and all of them are big enough to run one 833, but I would think that some are probably rectifier filament transformers. The terminal boards are not giving me any clues. This weekend I might have time to experiment with ohmmeter and low voltage AC, but some documentation would surely save a lot of time. If none of these are the 10VCT@10A or 10VCT@20A units, any suggestions where to turn next? I suspect that transformers from a variety of rigs with four 833s would work - anyone have a spare?
