  Seasonal... Gud antenna WX.
Antennas always work best when put up in cold ice and snow...except 43 years ago today, when two young NY hams, WB2ZPS, and WA2BAI (now AJ1G and KL7JT), went up on the WA2BAI roof, thickly coated with glare ice over many inches of snow, to put up a 6 meter beam for the January ARRL VHF contest.  Don't think we worked anyone with it at all.  At least we got off the roof with all major bones intact.  Steve called me after the last snow  we had last week and asked me if I wanted to do a reenactment, this time to get the antenna up BEFORE the contest.  Told him I hoped he was kidding, which he was, but we both still remember that temporary antenna insanity!

This is what 20 below does to coax connectors coming through a plexiglas window.

Do they really sell those things? I always figured the IR would drain a battery in a minute or two. Do they actually work?

I've got a widder electric vest for motorcycling and it works pretty well. It draws about 4 amps max and can keep me pretty warm down into the 30's on the bike, and lower for less windy pursuits. I use it with a 5 ah LiPo battery pack or the bike electrical system.

The VHF antenna erection brought back memories for the VHF contest. We used to have a group of about 3 of us who would put on an effort in the hills south of Rochester NY to contribute to the club score. One year we set up at a fellow hams house under construction on top of a nice hill - good VHF site about 30 miles SE of the city. The roof and western wall were in place, plus the rest of the frame. We set up a tent in the space that would later be a downstairs bathroom. When we went to put antennas up it was snowing and blowing so hard that while I was setting up the six meter beam, the wind was stripping shingles off the roof! It wasn't totally shingled at that point, so the wind was able to get under the leading edge, but it was still impressive to watch them flying off. Ah the good old days. This weekend was the same event, and I don't think anyone around town even got on the air, including myself.   Sad

High 50s/low 60s here the last few days, 20s-30s at night. Colder WX is on the way tonight and for the next few days. Might get down into the teens at night with daytime highs in the 30s. BRRRR.  Wink

Been cold here in the Bay Area, frost every morning until a few days ago when we got a warming spell, colder than normal for here right by San Francisco Bay which is a big heat source. Keeps it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, none one here has AC but 15 miles inland another story. Been here for 40 years and am spoiled, originally from MA, talked to my sister who lives in a town along the Cape Cod Canal, going to snow there. Don't miss that at all!!

For those of you who didn't catch the musical reference, do a google search on "Baby its cold outside" and listen to the Youtube Johnny Mercer/Margaret Whiting recording. Classic American standard. A great song that probably couldn't be recorded in today's world.

It's about 7 degrees here, I just checked the weather on the internet for Mont Alto which is where I'll be leaving for in about half an hour and it says it's 13 degrees over there.

It was -7 here this morning.  Now that's a little more like it.  Unfortunately I don't think it is going to stay like this for a few days, which is what we need if we don't want a repeat of last year's bug infested summer and fall.   We have no snow pack now.  The snow helps keep the temps down.   If it stays below freezing for a few more days, the guys who like to fish will be out on the river ice fishing.

Cars start easy here, provided you use synthetic oil and do your maintenance.

I'm all for eliminating "southern" bugs and airborn fungii.  ...stink bugs for one. Grin

I thought snow was an insulator, keeping the ground below it an a more constant cool.   So bare earth at subzero temps ought to kill more burrowing bugs.  Any cold in the trees will penetrate the bark and get those too.  What does us the best here is hard frost in the ground down a foot or more.

We had 6 deg. F. this am, about 11 to 14 now.  I about froze my ears off coming out of stores this am, just walking to car with groceries.  Mr. dumb walking against the wind with full loaded cart and hands not able to cover ears...

In contrast to your cold weather - last Friday at the main airport in VK2 the temp reached 46.4 deg C.
The highest temp on record was 45.2 deg C in 2006. The long term average temps for that area are 26.4 deg C.

Do you make the Ranch Dressing?

Hit about 20 here over night. The average low for for this time of year is 31. Supposed to not make it above freezing for the next few days. The average high this time of year is 51.

High here in Hidden Valley was 78.

Cars start easily.
