...And, if you haven't sent it your log data, no matter how little data you have, PLEASE DO SO  Cheesy Wink Smiley  We need it all.

I wrote a somewhat involved algorithm to break out common and known rig types (including some common tube types, etc.).  I thought some folks here might find the early results interesting.  The most common commercial transmitter is the Ranger, followed by the Valiant, Flex 5000, and so on.

It is virtually impossible to capture every possible rig type when the rig types can be entered in so many different ways in people's logs, but this is the vast majority what is in use out there in the AM world, or at least during the AM Rally.

The numbers indicate the number of individual calls who are associated with a particular rig type, as reported in all logs received so far.  475 unique call signs have been logged, so far (and we need YOUR log to make these results better!).

Here are the comments and the individual station LOG counts.

The numbers show the number of logs in which the particular call was entered.  THIS DOES NOT INDICATE WHO WON!!!  It shows haw many people worked a station and sent in logs to the same - not how many folks the station in question worked.  The comments are the source of the rig information, listed above.  It is all very interesting.  The information was greater than 30k bytes in size, so it spans two posts.

Each set of comments from every log in which the station appears is in quotation marks.

Format:
call sign, number of logs the call appears in, "comment 1", "comment 2", "comment 3", etc. etc. etc...

Example:
   W3GL, 19, "200w 3-500z", "TS440, linear amp, 300w", etc. etc. etc..

I'm glad this was successful. Maybe next year for me.

Either my work at every unholy hour of the day and evening will do me, in or old age/illness will, before I've time to put a big iron set on the air.

Participating with a TS430 and NCL2000 is respectable but it does not do it for me. Don't get a charge out of it. Can't get fired up about the sandbox and a linear amp. Am I too negative? old fuddy duddy? need to do it with a friend to be enthusiastic or motivated? wore out from work?
Where is K1DEU? he sometimes has answers to things like this.

Anyway it really made my day to read the results here and see them presented in analyze-able ways. Very uplifting! Good job to all!

Once I get everyone's logs, we'll publish the complete results, including the winners in all categories Cheesy

Anything that gets you on the air is completely acceptable, although I agree, it is more fun to run something you built than anything else!!!

Not off the hook  Smiley

You could just send me an email with whatever info you have.  At minimum I need the frequency (or band) call sign, name, location and whatever comments you have (equipment they are using, etc.) for whatever contacts you made.  If you have a description of your station, that would be helpful as well.

The free logging software (available here) -->http://www.classeradio.com/amtrlog.htm is actually the easiest way to do it, but an email is perfectly acceptable if you don't want to use the software this time.  Last year I received about half a dozen paper and hand written logs!  They were just fine.

Steve,

Is there a way to dump the output of your logging software locally? I'd like to save a CSV or similar type file.

Steve,

Is there a way to dump the output of your logging software locally? I'd like to save a CSV or similar type file.

Yes, you can get the output locally.  Next version has a real "Save As..." function, but for now just find your output file.  This is named [whatever_call_you_used].txt  (I.E. K4HX.txt).  There are also 2 backup copies named .bak and .bak1.  These files are located in the same directory or folder as the logging executable.

Edit the text file with notepad or any text editor.  At the end of the file, starting with "CS:[your_call]", there is information about you, your equipment, etc. which is specific to the logging program.  You can remove all of this, and then save the file as another name.

Then simply read the new file with Excel as text, and specify the delimiter character as the vertical bar | character.  Now you can do anything - including saving as .CSV.

The next version of the logging software has a "Save As...", and .csv is one of the formats available.  Another thing people will do is simply save the file as a different name (like K4HX_2012.txt) and use the logging software to open and view past years.

The new version also has an "Open..." function, which will facilitate the above feature Wink

This feature is also very useful for the "Net control station" version, which some of use use for nets like the Grey Hair Net and the Lonely Guys Net, where we want to save each week's net information and be able to look at it later.  The net version has features like checking stations in and out, etc. that are necessary for managing nets on the air.  It also lets you use a net list for nets that have regular or permanent members (like the Lonely Guys and Grey Hair Net). The stations who check in are highlighted in a different color, and propagated to the top of the list for easy viewing by the net control station.

TNX. I have logs in electronic form from past events, including the HMR from 10+ years ago. It's fun to compare years and look back in time.

Why?

Most of the earliest AM on the ham bands used low level modulation followed by a linear amp or amps. Running a linear is as traditional as you can get.

Nah, it's your thing. Run what you like to run and have fun. I just don't want people thinking that using a linear is not "real" AM.

If you're around, I'm going to call CQ on 15 meter about right now.

Technically a plastic radio A3 exciter driving a class AB RF amp produces authentic AM, i.e. continuous carrier and two sidebands.

My feeling is that this is okay to start with as I am currently doing, but it is not to be considered the be all and end all of AM.   It is a worthy and desireable goal to achieve what I consider to be the AM summit, namely a strapping vacuum tube plate modulated maul with audio equal to 1.5 times carrier power or more.   The point of that along with Class E and D s.s. rigs is to attain a level of radio knowledge and shop experience that is at least half the point of getting into AM in the first place.    Anything else such as getting nothing but off the shelf boxes and an amp from Ameritron, and pushing the little AM button and thinking of oneself as having done AM and going no further to me, defeats the entire pupose of getting into AM.   The unique challenges involved in attaining a satisfactory experience with AM require erecting the most efficient antennas possible, developing more sophisticated receiving methods, T/R switching and a transmitter, feedline and matching network capable of continuous  modulated QRO service with no time limit whatsoever.   This makes it necessary to attain some of the knowledge of the ancient radio fathers, through the hallowed texts of Laporte, Terman et al.

To allow one to be content to merely operate a Flex radio or some other robotically manufactured box and amp is to allow the nascent AMer to dwell in ignorance of the ancient texts, practices, traditions, culture and knowledge and this in my opinion, is to be discouraged.

bingo.

yes no wonder. pushing a button and turning two knobs was not enough. That is why I didn't want to do it, no skill needed, would have been boring to operate the station.

No need to pay for a shrink around here..

Being up to speed on Laporte, et al has nothing to do with what rig you run. Some of the leading antenna experts in our hobby run "pl ;Dastic rice boxes." You are confusing technical knowledge and practice with on-air experiences and equipment used.

The reality is that is takes just as much technical skill, probably more to work on a ricebox, do mods, etc. Sure just pushing a button and running AM doesn't take much effort. But, running a DX-100 doesn't take much effort either, other than lifting onto the operating bench.

There are lots of technical pursuits in this hobby. Let's not put anyone in a box unfairly or play the mine is better than yours game. It's counterproductive.

I understand Budley; what I was trying to get across is to encourage people to use AM as an opportunity to advance their knowledge and skill in the radio art but within the limits of their resources.

These are only opinions and not meant to be debated as if they are science and facts.  My opinion is entirely subjective; I only wished to express it.   I may very well fall short of my recommended goal but I wish to make an attempt and think it is an advisable endeavor, that's all.

I also just finished looking at the data; thanks for putting it up Steve--it is kind of surprising how interesting it is to look at what everyone is running.

Another interesting thing was what rigs were missing.  I was surprised to see no HT-20s.  Two other MIAs were the Meissner 150-B and the Eldico TR-1, both single 813 rigs.  Also no one had a Temco RA150 on.

There's really little reason to be concerned with the "I just hit the AM button for the first time" crowd. Those who do not get into the more technical/hands-on part of AM usually move on and and aren't heard from again. The others usually go get a vintage rig, homebrew something or modify their ricebox or an older ricebox.

Think of the AM button or the Flex radios as a recruiting tool.  Wink

Over the years, I've become less and less concerned about what radio someone is using, almost to the point of not caring at all, except as it fits into the ongoing conversation and whether is sounds good or not. What equipment someone has says little about who they are and if they are capable of an interesting conversation.

To allow one to be content to merely operate a Flex radio or some other robotically manufactured box and amp is to allow the nascent AMer to dwell in ignorance of the ancient texts, practices, traditions, culture and knowledge and this in my opinion, is to be discouraged.

Keep in mind Rob that many of us have been there and done that with restoring flea market treasures and homebrewing the big vacuum tube stuff. I rarely fire up the old basement station simply because it doesn't interest me any more. At this point I run what I enjoy using and don't give it another thought. I figure it's all good as long as you're having fun. It's a hobby, so I don't see any point in passing judgement about how the other guy gets himself on the air as long as the conversation is entertaining and we're enjoying ourselves.

Just sayin'    Smiley
