My grandpa served there in the Great War. He made it back and had a good life afterwards. He lost most of his hearing due to the blast from artillery.

Kudos for your grandpa..  I'll bet many lost their hearing in the mega artillary duals of WWI.    ...not to mention the loss of an entire generation in Britain, France, Austria and Germany, and the loss of the Austrian Empire.

I was very impressed with the basketball activities on the aircraft carrier in San Diego yesterday.  I particularly liked the high speed video of the construction of the court on the carrier deck.

We have a VA hospital here in this community and I often buy gas for the car there because it's a few cents cheaper.  I saw an elderly gentleman wearing a WW-II veteran ballcap the other day and it occurred to me that there aren't many of these Second World War Vets left.  It's like when I was a kid and we saw a WW-I vet at some Remembrance Day event (that's what Veteran's Day is called in Canada and the UK).  I thought the same thing back then. 

We were required to be in a cadet corps in high school and my buddy and I joined the Air Cadets because they didn't have to go to summer camp like the Army Cadets did.  We had a mandatory Church Parage every November 11th.  One time I spotted an elderly gentleman in the reviewing stand after the parade and noticed he was wearing a Victoria Cross.  That's the highest award the Brits give "For Valour" and is equivilent to the Medal of Honor.  Looked like anyone's granddad but for the medal.  I asked one of the others who he was.  "Oh, that's Colonel Mitchell", was the reply.  I looked him up in a book on VCs in the library.  They sure don't make 'em like that any more.
