My wife came across a movie on TCM that had Tarzan being pursued by some bad guys who were using an ART-13 to communicate with there cohorts some 250 miles away. The movie was “Tarzan and the Valley of Gold” circa 1966. The ART-13 was mounted in the back of light armored truck with the microphone neatly connected to the antenna connection on the side of the transmitter. No receiver was shown but it did set off a beacon light when a call came in. The cohorts were running around the jungle with a portable radio that looked like a 50’s style broadcast remote audio console with a big VU meter on it and a 3’ whip clamped to the side. Good for 250 miles during the day…not bad. To there credit the VU meter did move when it was “transmitting”.

I guess the budget didn’t allow for a technical consultant!
