Here are the results for the AM Transmitter Rally.  Congrats to our favorite curmudgeon.  Wink

There was a tie for overall 3rd place.  I am running statistics on rig types, but this is difficult.  When I have these results (if ever), I will certainly post them.

We had more participation this year than last year - 41 logs submitted, and 513 unique calls logged!  That's pretty good.

Good results in every category!

The results are in several parts because the total byte count is greater than is allowed in a single post.

Nice data set. Thanks for all the hard work Steve. Lots of fun and lots of good contacts.

Congrats to Ralph. The fast PTT in the east was the slowest to get out of the operating chair!

Thanks to all who participated and sent in logs.

That's a nice snapshot in time of the AMer personalities and rigs used.  I like reading the comments.

Good job, Steve.

Congrats to Ralph, W3GL.  I heard him say he used to be into contesting - this proves it ... Grin

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

Steve,
Can you put all of that data in a pie chart?   Wink

Wonderful job with the sorting and a lot of station participated which is the best part.

It's pretty interesting to read some of the comments for the various stations.  I'm trying to come up with a useful way to pick out the rig types from the comments.  The problem comes about with both the variety of transmitters, but more importantly the variety of ways any particular transmitter is entered into a log in the comments area.

I can say this so far - the Flex radio is a big favorite.

Congrats to Ralph W3GL!!!  Looks like I was 2nd best again.  Cry  Oh well...I do have an excuse...my antenna was down and I was out in the snow putting up an antenna until Sat. afternoon.   Anyway, that certainly takes nothing away from Ralph's fine effort!  Good job OM.

Thanks Steve for your efforts and a fun activity again this year.  A hearty thanks also to all those who participated and gave us the contacts.  Certainly lots of fun and great AM signals.

I second the thanks Steve--even though I didn't participate this year I appreciate all the work you have done.  What a great set of data on many perhaps most of the active AM stations now.  I dumped it all into a text file I can search with an editor.

Top states:

118 Illinois:IL
118 New York:NY
 84 New Jersey:NJ
 71 Pennsylvania:PA
 65 Connecticut:CT
 60 Virginia:VA

All the stations from Illinois!  Is that a misprint borrowed from (118)NY or did the W9's come out in droves that weekend?  Grin

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

Hey Steve,
It wud be interesting to see number of total contacts per band. My guess is 75/80M will be the hotspot but an overview of activity might be interesting.

Hi Tom,

Nope - that's correct!!!  Before W8Z sent in his log, the numbers were not the same (I forget which was higher), but after that they tied.

Bud - that's a good idea about the "by band" numbers.  75 meters was far and away the number 1, but it would be interesting to see the exact counts.  SMOP (Simple Matter Of Programming)   Cool

Steve

Nicely done Steve! It was great fun to play and a nice distraction from the nasty cold weather. Your logging program made it painless to keep and submit the necessary data.

Thanks,

The guys out in the mid-West (like Jack) are really ideally located - close enough to work both coasts with normal night time conditions.  In fact, I hear you folks out here in Massachusetts during the afternoon (and always in the morning to mid-morning).

Last year the area around IL was also very well represented, in all respects.  Jack, congrats on a great score during the 'Rally !   Smiley

Right, and Jack with that Federal rig you really add something to the midwest!   I have pondered the geographic distribution of AMers before (why so many in the northern midwest and northeast)  and have come up with a few theories:  It is A., a function of the traditional concentration of hams in the rust belt and B, that has fueled and kept alive the buying and selling of boat anchors at hamfests here.   However, AM activity is continuing to increase elsewhere.

It is curious, but it probably has to do with a combination of population density and the presence of engineering colleges (by extension, lots of engineers).  I think there's a reasonable concentration of AMers on the West coast as well, but I don't know when it actually happened there.

In the North-East, there were AMers running high fidelity audio back to the early 70s and there were actually a couple back in the 60s.  This was definitely an anomaly back then.  I used to get on and people would say "Hey, WBZ" or something like that.  Not too many had good audio.

There was a core group who kept the mode alive - a number of the younger people ran high power with good audio, and of course the old buzzards at the time were often heard on AM.  The big guns who attracted the most attention mostly had engineering backgrounds and many were attending or had attended one of the engineering schools in the area and/or were in broadcasting.  The numbers of AMers grew significantly during the late 80s and through the 90s.  I don't know why, exactly - maybe because more and more rice boxes had AM - I really can't say for sure, but it did happen!

Someone else may know the history of AM out on the West coast.

That's in interesting explanation about engineering schools, something I would have never considered.  I am under the impression that out west, AM activity is less compared to the East, but maybe I am mistaken about that.  When I was out in Calif. on business last fall, I brought a small Grundig sw rx with me and at night I'd walk outside and tune around on 75 and 160.  I never heard anyone back East, probably because I only had the telescoping antenna to use, but I did copy a few strong good audio AM signals from Washington State (Bob or Bill WA3something up there) and a guy down in the L.A. area who's call I have forgotten).   I've had some idea ham activity on the west coast is down in general because there are almost no hamfests out there and it seems to be impossible to have a decent antenna unless you have millions of bucks for real estate.  But maybe once you get in from the coast a hundred miles or more it gets better.  I think there are some decent antenna farms in the valley, i.e. the I-5 corridor.

I dunno Rob, check out the West Coast AMI net every Wednesday night.  Plenty of BIG AM and lot's of Broadcast TXer's with HiFi audio from engineers and enthusiasts.

Every Wed night at 8pm Pacific (that's 10 pm Central) on 3.870 AM.....

.... or tune in to the live cam action from many of the stations at stickam.com/wj6w at that time.  I've been able to check in from Louisiana a few times with 100 watts.

Anyway, the 2011 AM Tx rally fell on my work weekend but I was able to get a few contacts in anyway and have some fun!  Thanks STEVE for all the effort to make it happen.
