Back in the 50's and 60's, many of the tech schools used these types of large visual teaching aids as part of classroom apparatus. I remember seeing a large desktop visible transmitter, receiver, VTVM, scope, signal generator teaching aids. A lot easier then 20 to 30 students crowding around a typical 5 tube receiver chassis to learn the electronic basics.
