Both QST and AWA's journal this month have articles on homebrew receivers. Apparently a series developed during the late 50's and 60's. Double conversion, plug in coils and rivaled the better commercial rigs of the day. The first was built by W6TC and updated through the years through 1969.
Might be worth looking for one and great for single band use without too much sweat.
