I remember reading about license renewal in here quite a while ago, has
anyone don't it recently?  I remember the thread was that it was a pain.
However I ran into a ham who said its real quick now, fcc on the internet
has gotten better.

Anyone done it like recently? Mines up this winter!

I did mine a few months ago, for June 2006 expiration.  The FCC website has become much more user friendly.  It took me two tries to get the FCC ID number which is the most difficult step; the actual renewal procedure took me only a few minutes, and the licence came in the mail a few days later.

I did it back when the FCC was just setting up their license renewal system on line and it went smooth and I had the new license in a matter of a week or two. If anything it's gotten even easier these days. No longer any  need  to use third party renewal services. Just  go to the FCC site, apply  for a FRN number in advance and when renewal time comes just use the ULS system and you're done.

It is pretty simple to do online.

This link has all the details:

Dean,
Very easy but I think you can't renew too early. It won't let you into the system until you fall into the renewal window. fc

Dean,
Frank is right.  I tried to renew early one time and ULS system responded back saying I was too early and had to renew within 30 (or possibly 60 days) of expiration.

The renewal window is 90 days.  If you try before then it will not accept it.

In the true spirit of ham cheapdom, why pay someone else to do something that is free. I renewed on line a few years ago and it was quick and easy. The only problem was the oddbal piece of software that you had to download to navigate the FCC's website. It was kinda wierd, with my slow dialup it took about an hour to download the software, and it dosent tell you what it is doing when it was downloading, so you think your compooter  is locked up!

Once I finally got the software downloaded the rest of the renewal process took about 5 minutes, and it was free!

Well, they must have changed it fairly recently. You used to have to download some kind of a viewer to navigate their site. ( I know because I had to do it) If you dont have to anymore that only makes it easier and better. "whats not to like" Grin

Just a reminder that us guys who got in on the bandwagon in '96 for a "vanity call" when they opened up are all coming up for renewal in November.  Vanity call renewals are $21.90.  It costs to be vain...

And don't forget the new question on form 605.  You can get it at:

http://www.fcc.gov/Forms/Form605/605main.pdf

"4) The applicant/licensee certifies that neither the applicant/licensee nor any other party to the application is subject to a denial of
Federal benefits pursuant to Section 5301 of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988, 21 U.S.C. § 862, because of a conviction for
possession or distribution of a controlled substance. This certification does not apply to applications filed in services
exempted under Section 1.2002(c) of the rules, 47 CFR § 1.2002(c). See Section 1.2002(b) of the rules, 47 CFR § 1.2002(b),
for the definition of “party to the application” as used in this certification."

Wow, next we will have to pea in a cup to renew. I can see it now Riley holding court as a steady stream of hams file into the bathroom with blue water to give a sample.

I looked up the law in question and it's not applicable to the Amateur Service.  It's about receiving governmental awards for establishing commercial applications, or something like that.  And since we're now sharing the application with other services...welll.....

If that anti-drug provision applied to hams the airwaves would be depopulated fast  Grin Grin Grin

Frank,
They did change the fcc site a while back. I remember it was a pain the first time I tested the waters asking for a copy of my license. When it was time to renew it had been changed and a lot easier.
