In case you all missed this one last week:
Quote
The FCC has held up the license renewal of a New Jersey Novice ticket holder for failing to respond to a Commission field office Citation and a Warning Notice, both dating back to 2004. Hollingsworth told Ronald A. Mondgock, KA3OMZ, of Burlington, that if he did not submit a timely reply to his February 6, 2006, letter, his application for renewal would be dismissed "and a Notice of Apparent Liability for Monetary Forfeiture will be issued against you."

In February 2002, Hollingsworth wrote Mondgock regarding allegations he'd transmitted in the 75-meter phone band, which is unavailable to Novice class licensees. In July 2004, the FCC's Philadelphia Field Office cited Mondgock for allegedly failing to identify, making transmissions involving obscenity and indecency and operating on a frequency not authorized under his license.

On February 15, 2002, we issued a letter to you advising you that you had operated on the AM portion of the 75-meter amateur band, a portion of the band not authorized to you under your Novice Class license.

Interesting ..... the FCC thinks there's an AM portion of the 75 meter band.
Hmmmm..............

And, they're going to decide what's best for the future of the Amateur Radio Service. Sort of, gives you that nice warm and fuzzy feeling.

I think they meant "phone".  SSB is a form of amplitude modulation also.

If they really recognise an "AM" portion, that is a double-edged sword, also implying that AM should stay within the confines of that portion.  Of course, that would also imply that SSB should stay out.

Shoot, I'd take 3800-3900, that would be fair. Then the slopbuckets could have 3900-4000. Problem solved

Don you could never convince a certain handful of slopbuckets that they actually are running "a form of AM."

But if we take Riley's reference in the more typical definitiion, Old Ron Boot may have done us a favor if outsiders are reading tea leaves and see Riley talking about "an AM portion" of the band.

When he first came to the job, Riley expressed an opinion that operating down low on 75 was unusual.  I didn't get that it was a negative view, just that AM activity was less expected.

That's why I think it behooves us to entertain a QSO away from the narrow little rut some of us seem to prefer.

A lot of people are breaking the window in the time since Riley made his observation. Here on the east coast, and at least on the weekends, there is now TYPICALLY a handful of AM roundtables from 3810 to 3860 Kc, peacefully taking place among other modes and activities that historically would have caused friction.
