Anyone know what that Nit Nit Nit Nit sound that appears and disappears on 75 from time to time is? It's annoying to say the least.

Ionisponder from Westford, Mass....Haystack Observatory.

Very annoying and creeps up and down the band...uses a doppler type device and NVIS antennas pointed straight up.

Unless they've added some HF gear since they last updated their website ten years ago, the only specific transmitters I see listed on there are a couple of 150mHz, 2 megawatt jobs, and a pair of 2 megawatt jobs up on 440mHz.

Check out their  web site Digisonde.   You can get real time ionospheric soundings it.  The last sounding went on at the low end of the 80 M band.  It must be interesting stuff if you can make it all out (I can't).

So my question is if this is legal how can they do this Nit Nit Nit crap over a band segment and be legal?  It doesn't make any sense. Then again maybe common sense has been thrown to the wind.

I agree its a huge PIA, esp here in the Northeast.

Check out this link that WA2CYT sent me, seems to answer some questions -->>> www.cos.ict.kth.se/education/msc/radio/courses/RKBASIC_2E1511_2005/downloads/Manual_Lab1.pdf

This one sounds a little like the ztt-ztt signal on 75 meters.

RACAL / THALES PANTHER-H, INTELLIGENT FREQ. HOPPER
http://rover.vistecprivat.de/~signals/WAV/PANTHER-H_SOC.WAV

So do these two.

ARCOTEL FARCOS 1800Bd, EADS/RACOMS (ALE)

http://rover.vistecprivat.de/~signals/WAV/ARCOTEL1800.wav

ARCOTEL MAHRS 2400Bd, EADS/RACOMS (ALE)

http://rover.vistecprivat.de/~signals/WAV/ARCOTEL2400.wav

None of the ionsonde signals listed at the above site sound like the 75 meter signal.
