304-TH - Workin' it

« on: November 04, 2005, 09:07:23 PM »

I was just paying my September electric bill and thought I'd pass along the details-

Total kwh used= 1080.
Total charges: $84.82

First 600 kwh at .073
Next 480 kwh at .069

Plus a $7.90 monthly administrative charge to the REA.

We have an electric range and clothes dryer. Everything else is propane and wood.
I'm curious what electric rates are in other parts of the country.

Our recent propane refill was up over 30% from last year.  Electricity might actually be competitive now (until they jack up the $$/kwhr as well).  Gasoline was down to $2.26/gal yesterday.  Betcha heating fuel stays at its peak price through Feburary.

We cook and heat water with propane, and the entire summer makes only a minuscule dent in the reading on the propane tank.  But as soon as heating season arrives, you can almost see the little hand on the meter moving towards zero.

Our last electric bill (total) was $58 and change.  Our lowest in the three years we've been here was just under $50.  Our highest $120.  When we first moved in the the bill typically was around $70 or $80 for the first few months. Many of the incandescent lights in the house were changed to compact flourescent and the bill dropped to the 50's.  The highest occurred during midwinter of last year as I was running an electric space heater in the garage to keep the temp around 50 degrees which helped keep the bedroom above the garage warmer. During the summer with the central A/C running highest during the summer was around $100.  Most recently the electric companies increased their rates and there was an increase subsequently in the bill to the customer. Our average bill jumped up about $10 or $12 as a result.

This increase made me take my next step to electric savings and that was to put all devices that are in standby like the TV, Sat receivers, computer modem, garage door openers and anything that would suck power like wallwarts were either put on battery operated timers or just unplugged all together.  That alone recovered the costs of the increases. My electric meter barely moves now when nothing is being used in the house. Average electric bill is back in the $50 to $60 range as of this month.

Hi Bill,

Our power company is PP&L(PA power and light), mostly a combo of hyro-electric and nuke. For October we used 830 KWH for a total of $78.57 ($.09466/KWH total). The bill was broken down as follows, sheeeesh:

Distribution charge   $8.00
plus
First 200 KWH   .02193/KWH
Next 600 KWH   .01984/KWH
Last 30 KWH   .01862/KWH
Transmission charge   830 KWH  .00564/KWH
plus
First 200 KWH   .01329/KWH
Next 600 KWH   .01178/KWH
Last 30 KWH   .01088/KWH
PA Tax Adj. surcharge   0.064% ($0.01)
Generation Charges
First 200 KWH   .05182/KWH
Next 600 KWH   .04554/KWH
Last 30 KWH   .04178/KWH
And last but not least another PA Tax Adj. surcharge   0.064%  ($0.02)

Confuses the heck out of me. Bill, you're getting a deal....here oil heat, electric range, dryer, nuke, TV's, radio....

I'll look it up and tally here.

Funny bit -- an AMer friend of mine made who shall remain nameless made the mistake of putting a separate power meter on his workshop when they laid service to it. He runs a Collins 300-G, an RCA BTA1-M, and maybe by now a Western Electric.

Bet the wife scrutinizes THAT revolving wheel from time to time.

None of this "it's the hot water heater, honey."

If he is the one paying the bills, she's none the wiser!
