The Washington area is a major hub for technology that transmits high-speed Internet connections over power lines, and yesterday the city of Manassas celebrated becoming one of the first communities in which the service is commercially available.

Chantilly-based Communication Technologies Inc. announced it had completed citywide installation of the technology and will step up marketing it to Manassas's 12,500 households.

Interesting they are expanding.  For another aspect, here is a quote I found courtesy of the ARRL here in OK.

Also, another BPL installation has gone 'BYE BYE' ..................

-- Pennsylvania Utility Cites Unfavorable Economics in Ending BPL Trial (Oct
5, 2005) -- PPL Broadband announced this week that it's terminating its
broadband over power line (BPL) experiment in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley.
According to media reports, the company is citing the high cost of a
full-scale BPL rollout and competition from cable and DSL service in the
region as the reason for the shutdown. Approximately 300 households
participating in the trial were said to be paying $40 a month for the
high-speed Internet service. Although interference was reported by Amateur
Radio stations in some of PPL Broadband's BPL service area, that apparently
was not a factor in the company's decision to drop out of the BPL race.

$40.00 a month for BPL Huh?  That's outrageous !! I can get fiber optic service for less than that. Far more reliable and much faster than BPL.  I can also get DSL for less. I wouldn't waste my money. Hopefully the fact that we have faster service for less will keep BPL away.
