Americans aren't nearly as concerned about big-time corporate and white collar crooks as they are about some poor schmuck on the street with five grams of crack cocaine.  The white collar crook, after all, dresses nicely and has good manners.  And he probably speaks perfect English too.

I should have pointed out too, Frank, that he's not one less crook on the street--he's one less crook in the suite.

And yes, indeed, some people do think that way.

FYI: Just so readers don't get confused, Ebbers was CEO of Worldcom.

I know a woman who worked for Worldcom in Ashburn, VA, in the early 2000s.  One day when Ebbers was walking around in the building, she yelled out "Put me in, coach!  I can do it!"  Somehow I don't think he heard.

Back in the late 90's many of us in the corporate environment had the "make the numbers" cloud hanging over us daily. The art of creative accounting almost became a way of corporate life.
