Has anyone tried removing the cast iron housing from a hv transformer such as the one in a bc610 transmitter?  Can it be done to lighten the heavier than hell thing or is it filled with tar?

I had a BC610 HV transformer and tried to remove the housing on one end to repair a secondary terminal. I got the housing off about a 1/2 inch or so and said screw this. Leads were very short and rather risking damage, left it as is. Sealed it back up and sold it. Buyer wanted it as-is and I shipped the anchor across country. Little to no tar in the housing.

That transformer is a beast with respect to weight. I am sure some could be repurposed as battleship anchors.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I have one that is available, along with the matching choke for a very good price for someone that wants to travel to get it. i.e. almost free. I changed my plan to use some BC iron. Have some caps as well. Not the BC-610 ones, but good and usable.
