   That's a darned shame; I'm very sorry to hear that. I've always been fortunate in buying used test gear, especially HP, but getting a lemon is always a risk. Don't dumpster it, the fix might be simple, when you have time later on. The service manual is out there.
   And, just to be sure, I suggest going back and trying it again—a sanity check, some might say. I've worked in electronics all my life, and I can't tell you how many times I've assumed that a piece of gear wasn't functioning correctly, only to find that I'd made a simple mistake in the setup. Always troubleshoot the operator first!
   So where to now? If you're not inclined to risk getting another lemon—and I don't blame you—there's always the modern Chinese gear out there, from Amazon and eBay and such.

Yeah I've gone back and performed enough experiments and  I'm sure enough it's no good. So I guess back up on ebay it goes. I got enough other projects. I I have too many things around here that need fixing I tend to get mind-cluttered and nothing ends up getting the attention it needs. This HP is mighty fancy. I might not even have the knowledge to tackle it. And in the end it's really a VHF sweeper. 455 is right at the bottom of its range and it's the dickens to get that accurately. And most of what I do is HF. I'm sticking it back up for sale. There's other guys  out there who can dive right in and get it right. It's a nice machine in beautiful shape.
