I found this 12-page history pdf by the ARRL, covers the pioneering trans-Atlantic tests period:

Just heard from Bob Allison WB1GCM, that W1VCM at the Connecticut Museum of Radio and Electronics in Windsor CT will be on for the party on 40 and 80 meter CW and possibly also on AM, presumably with the big Gates.  We could use some other tall ships on 80 and 40 SSB and AM, CW as well!

I expect to start out on 80 CW from my mobile at Stonington Point CT at about 2100Z (4 PM
EST) for several hours, and then operate from home on 80 CW with the BC-191’s 211s in
MOPA that makes about 75 nicely chirping watts.

There are usually a good number of UK and EU ops in the 80 meter SSB DX window commencing at about our local East Coast sunset through their sunrise over there.
