I am cleaning up, and trying to revive a BC-779 which has a chrome plated chassis, The first thing I an doing a power supply, it is the small footprint, no feild coil, oil filled cap version. The cool thing is the power supply came up perfectly, which is the great thing about oil filled caps.Do these contain PCB's?

I know I screwed this up but I have the BC-794. The reason I traded for it was because the the -779 didn't have 160M.

Why would a military receiver have a chrome platted chassis?

Scott
I dobut that there is any PCB they were used in Hi voltagte situations in the oil as an arc suppresor. This is how it was explained to me by an enginer. I worked in an old plant built in 1909. Some of the original transformers were still in use. Every couple of years a company would come in and pump the oil out and filter it to remove any moisture. It was intresting to watch. They would run several difrent tests on the oil to determine the health ocf the transformer. Such as arcs leakage etc.

Why would a military receiver have a chrome platted chassis?
According to Henry Rogers, it may have been done for corrosion resistance if used in the tropics, by the signal corps.
I will start working on, and cleaning it tonight. I work nights for the next 6 weeks,
so on my nights off there is time to do the work. I also have a SP-10 that is chromed as well, that was in mid restoration in the early 60's as far as I can tell,
when the work stopped.
Detroit47 John, Thanks for that, The most important thing is they are not leaking regardless

Ok here is the BC-794. I don't know why they painted it mauve but it is a pretty clean radio. I was thinking about digging it out when you were talking about it on the other thread. I got a manual for it which coincidentally also has the BC-779 and the BC-1005.

Very Nice! Not really a bad color choice in my mind, it sets it apart from the usual.
The power supply is close enough to use now.
The third receiver is a SP-400, not chromed.

This isn't specifically about your radio, but my I-177 was jungle proffed in November 1944. I am sure it was for the signal corps.

As I said on the other thread, I was told it was for the Admiral's quarters on a flag ship. They would usually listen to the other news going on to get a grip on how the war was being fought on the other side of the globe. Whereby he could use it to lift crew moral while preparing for another operation. Also to hear what was happening at home. Having passed through flag quarters in my day, I remember the flag and staff liked shiny things and this was in the 80's. So that reasoning would not surprise me.

So this has a chrome chassis also?
I don't think my TV-7 was treated, it looks like everything else of the period.
Edit:
I'm a little closer, the receiver works, although not very good at this point.
There may be a band out or two, or there is nothing on them.
i can hear the channel near 5mhz pretty good.

No it is not chrome. It was treated with a lacquer to do the job. That is what the tag says. I just thought it was intresting. I would like to add the tester works perfectly.

So,
I listened to last night, and it kind of works. The band switch turns pretty hard, and may need lubrication someplace. I can receive in the 5-10 mc band "ok' but the antenna does not really pick up well, when I put my hand near the center RF tubes the signal really improves. The 10-20mc band is much louder than the rest, but I only hear the rushing sound, without stations or noise present anywhere on the band.
