Hi everybody. I used to post on here a little bit about 6 or 7 years ago. I was mostly interested in building DIY transmitters and test equipment for HF (I know I only have a technician license but I really love just noodling around on the work bench).

I ended up taking a long hiatus from the hobby but recently moved to a new home where I have a ton of space for a ham shack and a variety of antennas so I am very excited to get back into the mix. I need to renew my license next year and I intend on getting a General or Extra class license so I can actually get on the air on HF. I'm also generally interested in SWL and plan to setup a few different test antennas specifically for that purpose on my property. I've also got some old boat anchor receivers I am hoping to restore.

Anyways, I just wanted to say hello and start to get involved here again.

OM, you can get on HF right now: please see http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Regulatory/Band%20Chart/Band%20Chart%208_5%20X%2011%20Color.pdf

Hi Solomon and welcome back!!

You can get on 10 meters ssb now just in time for the band to be waking up again!

If you go for your general now and are successful you won't need to renew!! Smiley

Have a great Christmas Holiday!

Thanks everyone! I had no idea technicians can do 10m SSB. Has that always been the case?

I'm going to try to upgrade to extra as soon as the pandemic is over, but maybe I should buy a cheap 10m transceiver before that..

OM, when the pandemic is over, everyone is going to be going crazy trying to get back to the good old days that I doubt you'll have any time to study for anything not related to your job or your "Honeydo" list!

NOW is the time to study! You can take the exam online, in total safety, and if you can find a Laurel VE team doing online exams, it'll be free.

Bill, W4EWH

P.S. There aren't any cheap 10 meter transceivers! The price of a new "10 meter" transceiver - they're all intended to be used on CB instead of the ham bands - is close enough to the prices of the previous generation of ham transceivers that you'll  do better with one of those.

Making AM GREAT Again!

You can find an HTX-10 or HR2510 for a hundred and fifty bucks.

You can find second Gen solid state rigs (TS440) for less than 400 bucks.

You can find recent Gen rigs (ft857) for 600.

All will require a power supply.

Myself, I have all three rugs above, plus others.

The ft857 is nice since it is small enough to go mobile and has all bands except 220 from 160 meters to 70cm.

Yeah Welcome!
2nd the suggestion of getting a true ham radio. It's a lot less likely to have been hacked up by a CB radio shop that a 10 meter radio.
