My old uncle once told me....
When he grew up in the 30's and 40's, when you turned 15 your father would take you to the men's clothing store and buy you a suit. You wore that suit until it shined. If you didn't have a suit on in those days he said you were considered a bum.
It always amazed me from old pictures how men would do manual labor work in those suits. There was a drastic line. You were either an "overall man" or you tried to stay in the in the white collar zone by wearing a suit. Even bums riding the rails wore suits.
A much different time than today. Rosie O'Donnell changed everything.
