It's been a long time since I had a Flex 1000 and I used the parallel-to-parallel cable, never the parallel-to-USB.  But I do remember others who had struggled trying to get the latter to work and if memory serves the only adapter that worked right was one that used a TI chip.  Don't ask me what the chip number was as I never investigated.

As indicated, the was only some specialized USB to parallel port cable that would work with the SDR-1000. It got worst when I believe the cable was discontinued. You might try the  Flex community board for further answers.

If you are trying to use an SDR1000 with a modern OS PC, a Greek ham came up with a modern interface, Pi SDR-IQ. Christos used an Orange Pi and a daughter board to interface the audio(I/Q) and a LPT port adapter to tie in controls of the Flex to Orange Pi. This then plugs into the USB port of any PC. Works pretty slick
