Hi!

Currently I have a T1154M transmitter in the workshop, so far I have good power on all bands.
Modulation is awful, carrier too high.
Running it from stabilized power supply, a bit shy of 1.2 kV.
It's a MOPA.

Frequency coverage:
200-500 kHz (yellow)
2.35-4.5 MHz (red)
4.5-8.7 MHz (blue)
8.7-16.7 MHz (blue)

Very colorful user interface as can be seen on the attached picture.
To the left, set frequency
To the right, output network
In the middle, tubes and meters.

MO is a ML6 triode, Modulator/side tone etc ML6
PA is two parallel PT15 pentodes, suppressor modulated.
Output power, I see approx. 60 W on 20 meters and a hair shy of 90 W on 80 meters, all on CW.

The modulator tube and the oscillator shouLd be  vt105. i never tried an ML6. The DC voltage at the third grid of the VT104 is quite critical for a good modulation. I had a leaky capacitor in the modulation circuit upsetting the DC level at G3 which resulted is a bad modulation.  The power at AM should be approx 20 Watts. When you get 90 Watts at CW, thats a lot for the T1154. (A 1154 TURBO?) Check the DC voltages at G1, G2 and G3
You are lucky to have a complete set, mine was ""modified"" Cry when I found it and I had to build it up again to have it working. No driver coils, no oscillator coil, CW relay gone, modified output circuit etc. And the yellow section completely removed. But it works again at the HF bands.

Nico, they are both VT105, ML6 is just another name for the tube.

From what I've read, the output is not normally 90 W or so, but as you say, I have the Turbo version.
Previously I did work quite a bit with turbo systems on cars, as a Master Technical Trainer at Saab Automobile, so just following that tradition.

I will perform a complete check up, once I've put together some cables of the slightly more permanent type, lab cables and alligator clips, could be a bit unreliable...

I'm impressed of what you had to do with your T1154, that must have been quite a task to perform!
I must say that I've been lucky so far, nothing really problematic and only mechanical stuff.

Wow, you Da man! You have an ARC-5, ART-13, BC-375 and now a T-1154
Do you have the R-1155 receiver to go along with it? I had one couple years back and remember that I had to change every capacitor in it. They were all open, every one. Hope they did not use the same cans in the transmitter. Also they used combo capacitors in all the bypasses that were a can with three or four 0.1 or something like that that were not only open but also the insolation on the wire fell off the wire as soon as you touched it. The T-1154/R-1155 were to the British what the BC-348/ART-13 were to the Americans but having worked on and converting tons of this stuff the British stuff just don’t age anywhere as well as the US stuff.
Have lots of other stuff around the same age like the Russian US-P receiver that appears to have held up better than the Britt’s stuff. Don’t have any German or Japanese sets so can’t speculate on them. Been working on getting a Torn EB but don’t have one yet.

No, no R-1155 yet, will se if it happens.
As far as I understand, the receiver requires plenty of work to be OK, wires and caps.
Luckily, that is not the case with the T-1154!

Tried to reduce the supply voltage to 940 V, and got this modulation pattern.
Not super great, but no too bad.
Still, something needs to be fixed!

Hi!

Well, I guess you both do have a point there, modulation is not bad at all.
But, I'm hoping to improve it.

Plus a few other things such as cleaning and adjusting the keying relay, a real piece of art.
I have had a few successful QSO's on 10 MHz, drift is, should we say, significant and it's chirps and jumps around.
The frequency jumps could be because of not having taken care of the keying relay.

I've read that the blocking capacitor in the back of the rig, its a grey box with two sections, is known for leaking and will upset the modulator.  The restoration practice is to drill out the bottom and restuff them.

Jason, yes I have seen some info on the net that points at that capacitor.
So far I have done nothing about the modulation issue, if there really is one?
(Well, I do think I can make things slightly better.)
Have been busy with other transmitters and my fire truck.

But, sooner or later, my attention will be aimed at the T1154 again.
So far NOTHING electrical has been fixed, ALL soldering joints appears to be untouched.
Only a number of "minor mechanical things" has been corrected or adjusted.
The keying relay will be cleaned and adjusted, hopefully make the frequency somewhat more stable when keying.

Very good, I haven't had mine on yet, I have to make up a new 75K power resistor for the back and a power supply!
