Hi folks..got some questions about this item that looks like it came from the 50s or 60s..maybe older as it sports a brown "wrinkle" paint job..??..anyhoo what was this filter used for..Huh..says 115/220vac and 200 watts on plate on top..AC line filter maybe as it has an electrical female receptacle on the side to plug into..??..on opening it up I find 3 sets of wirewound spools and a 4 capacitor bank going to a ground connection below the plug..the caps are showing signs of oil or whatnot leaking unto the paper surrounds on them..they are Solar .05MFD 600WVDC marked..would like to replace them but this brings up my other question..I have in stock some various Western Electric caps made by Sprauge..never used and the same values as the Solar ones..the originals like most paper caps have one end marked outside foil which goes to ground..the Western Electric guys DO NOT have this marking BUT they do have a red dot on one end..every single one in my collection irregardless of value..does this mean "outside foil" or for what it's worth does it matter?...so what is it.?.the filter..and can someone tell me about the Western Electric caps...thank you!!  73 de DAVE
PS: I shoulda given the full name of the company unless someone thinks I'm talking 'bout a new offering at TACO BELL..
here ya be...Technical Appliance Corp 17 east 16 New York NY..only the history of the company is on Google

It sounds like a 3 pi section AC line filter for he want mojo filter, come together, over me. I can tell you about Western Electric components, the only standards they adhere to are Western Electric's. If you use those caps you're taking a 50/50 chance that dot means anything meaningful to anyone outside that plant in Harrison, NJ that became a toxic waste Superfund site. If you want to refurbish it to original specs I'd use good old Orange Drop caps.

By now I want to stomp that chihuahua into a little wet spot on the floor. Toxic Hell... make a run for the toilet.

Tnx Warren 'bout the info on Western Electric..I tried lookin' up what the red dot meant as they are not electrolytic..got quite a stash here..the usual trying to cut corners (bein' cheap)..the only "surprise" I encountered was lookin' on Ebay to see the exact same ones here goin' for astronomical prices!..if I decide to spend any time on this I'll get orange drops but man-o-man the nearest parts supplier is over 20 miles from me..methinks it's time to find another winter project             73 de DAVE

Well Dave, what does it matter where the parts supplier is when these days people buy on line? Back in the day they were all over, but when things started drying up there was this guy a few miles north specializing in surplus stock, and another a few miles west with row upon row of stuffed parts bins and a shop in the back repairing Tektronix scopes. The techie was all upset he couldn't get a certain replacement transistor, a couple of minutes later I handed him a generic from his own stock. He asked how i knew that, I told him I used to be an engineering assistant at a sorting house. Transistors come in 55gal fiber drums untested and unbranded, they go down a line of sorting stations that test them and when one matches the programmed curves it goes in a drum for numbering and branding, those that don't get passed down the line. At the last station it's pass or fail, pass go in one drum to be numbered and branded, fail get ground to powder and recycled. Yeah, you can have a dozen brands and numbers all for the same transistor.

That having been said, there is always good old reliable Mouser Electronics: https://www.mouser.com/ That's just one off the top of my head, surely there are others when you type "acetate capacitors", Mylar capacitors", or whatever fancy dielectric comes to mind in your favorite search engine. For what its worthless I use Startpage HTTPS with Duck Duck Go as backup, I value Internet privacy. I am disappointed this connection is not secure, they seem to be dragging their feet with upgrading to SSL.
