Brrrr- it's cold in the shack! Fire up the BIG RIG

Was listening late night a few nights back, and did not catch the fellow's callsign, DX, about 3.785. He was describing his antenna. Said it was a variation of some 4EL big boom 80m beam, but he had 10EL!!

I'm thinking to myself, what the heck is he holding this monster UP with??
And then, what is being used to turn it!

I've seen pix of big beams like this years past, the boom looking like Rohn 45 tower turned sideways.

He mentioned a website where the 4EL was shown along with pix his mobile set up. The amusing part was that he was chatting with a US station who being a relatively new licensee had about no clue as to what the DX station was trying to explain to him... but the QSO was a bit low on the receiver, near the noise floor in parts and I was half asleep. Did I dream this? Anyone know who the DX station is with the beam?

Btw, he said he also had a 4 square. And after a phone call another station popped in saying that he was on call for emergencies and probably would not be back after one of those phone calls. Must have some  bucks and real estate as well... nice neighbors too, who don't mind a 160ft horizontal boom!! Roll Eyes   Roll Eyes

I'm also thinking that it would have to be a log periodic.  Ten elements on a parasitic yagi would be a waste on a 160 foot boom.  I have installed a number of 4 to 30 mhz rotary logs in various corners of the world, on 100 foot booms.  They operate fairly well on 75 meters, but if one looks at the current distribution it is apparent that not all of the elements are pulling the wagon.
Once from KP4, I lit one of them up with a 50 watt transceiver on 3.846 to talk to some friends back home.  It did indeed make a joyful noise and the directivity was fun when I rotated it.  It was reported as being 25 db over nine back in Maine.  There are so few gain arrays on 80 meters that they truly stand out.
A few years ago Ham Radio carried some articles on wire log periodics, including some designs for 80/75 meters.  With some tall trees for supports, one can be loud, at least in one direction without the half million dollar cost of a hydraulically rotated LP.

Someone posted this 160 folding yagi a few years back. When you look at this along with the one OH8X had up for 160, it makes 80m seem almost like child's play in comparison.

I recall talking to a guy in SC a few years ago who claimed he had a ten element yagi on 80 meters. It was a wire beam with a rope "boom."  That's probably who you heard Bear.
