It's alive. IT'S ALIVE!!!

« on: December 16, 2015, 08:04:36 AM »

Just an update. I will be performing the initial energization of the Gates BC1T either this coming Sunday or Monday, depending on when Mein Bruder KK4TVR (who has turned into a very active AM'er) can make it over to act as safety crew and/or the forensics witness for emergency responders.

We will bring it up on just filaments first and let it cook for awhile prior to hitting the plate relay "ON" switch.

It's been a long, enjoyable slog since acquiring this TX from K2DX last April. If all goes well, then we'll begin work on moving the beast over to 75 meters from it's last allocation of 1450 KC at WNOS, New Bern, NC. The Gates started life at 1540 KC, WAWA, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Here is a photograph link at Flickr.

Merry Christmas/Hanukkah to all and please be safe if you must engage in travel over the holidays.

I assume that the "SLOG" means that you have cleaned her up and made a lot of visual inspection and the transformers and HV are all ready for the big CLICK?
It should be interesting how she comes back to life. Wish you good luck on that nice Gates

And don't start worrying about the electrical draw on your house system. A few hours of testing or burn-in is not noticeable. It's running 24/7 that you will see any increase. Like running your central air on hot summer days. Ham use and even ole buzzard transmissions will not be noticed on the bill.
Plus that gentle sound of the cooling fan and the glow of the pubes will make for some comfortable evenings on the air

Keep us up to date on your test run

The slogging paid off........she's pretty clean...
A little more video on the meters....Tubes glowing slightly red and some meter readings might show us more progress.
Good luck

I would not be grabbing plate caps on anything that had power to it without shorting things out first.

Yes, I did hit the plate switch at 1/2 power (one of the HV rectifiers disconnected per the manual). 1400V at 0.4A idling with no modulation. Can't do much more till I get the multimeter working so I can set driver bias, etc., and neutralize per the manual. Took a chance hitting the contactor but it worked with no destruction. One of the output 833s was getting hot so we'll have to chase that one down as well. House full of people with the holidays so likely will not get any more work done until this coming week. The terrorist is Jordan my son performing sentry duty in his AirSoft getup. Those little plastic pellets can put an eye out. Listen for the rapid clicking sound at the beginning of the video===that is Jordan shooting his AirSoft M16. Unfortunately, will not make the rally. Still need to run permanent power, audio lines, remote controls etc., as well as rework the aerial to a resonant 80m dipole fed with coax to eliminate points of failure.

Enjoy your time with family and be safe from those dangerous kid's games. You have made good progress with the TX. Gently getting ready for the Ham bands. A good slow debugging process after sitting a while and the move to 160M.
You got a lot to do there.
Thanks for the update

Hi,

Speaking of DVM meters, one of the more accurate and survivable meters I have used is the Southwire 11060S.

I think I bought it at Lowes.
