I would like to use a variac on the primary of my plate transformer in my future 4-1000a gg amp build.

I will be using a transformer with 4160v secondary, bridge rectification, filter capacitors.

I would like to use WA1QIX wiring schematic as seen here:

My question is what amp variac will I need?

Thanks,

R,

I don't know.... but that has never stoped me from commenting.

See this,     http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=18634.0

3kV*.7A=  2.1kW

The filthament  draws 21 Amps.    21*7.5 = 157 W , So totaling these you have 2257 Watts.
2250/240 = 9.4 Amps.

You may find this site of interest.      http://w2dtc.com/   Ken has some nice chassie pics also.

Welcome to the board,
