Yo'
I'm Doing the WA3DSP Mods to a Modified Ranger.
Doug's excellent write up on this has been pretty straight
forward to this point. I'm getting Frustrated by the
VFO, Buffer, Multiplier keying. We had this Ranger working
real well about a year ago and my cust. liked it so much
he used it all the time but didn't make any provision
to control AC input Voltage. Alas, he came back all
"Cooked out".
In his current configuration he does every
thing he should except provide grid current to the PA
in "PHONE" unless I press the CW Key. The "ZERO" func-
tion works fine. I have not tested the Modulator yet
but have nice waves to the EL34 grids, The MOSFET power
and "DRIVE" controls work well, The LV MOSFET regulator
is ROCK SOLID at 300V. The EL34 grids are getting driven
by a Phase inverter. VERY NICE! A link to Dougs write up:
http://www.crompton.com/hamradio/JohnsonRanger/RangerRestoration.html This is where this Ranger has been modified
by a previous owner to incorporate that Sequenced keyer
board and fixed Bias for the Modulators. So here we go
with a few questions:
1. Did Johnson offer the Keyer board as an "ADD ON"
to existing kits already in the field?
2. If so does anyone have a copy of the instructions
supplied with it, or know if there were any changes
to the operate switch SW4A? (Front most wafer)
I have SW4B working correctly.
3.What sort of Voltage level was developed by the
6AL5 Bias Rect. when powered via the taps off
power XFMR? Maybe I'm getting too much.
I call this thing "Semi-Early style" since
he has the keyer board yet No taps on the power xfmr for
it. The Mod was getting power via, (You Guessed It) a
pair of 20K 20W "R" off the LV taps. Also Function SW4B
has no pin 9 Contact, The lug is there for the Ip shunt.
