Several William Orr circuits here.  Also, the low down on that problematic Heath circuit.  12AU7's clean it up.

If you are referring to the DX-35, it has always had 12AU7's as the screen modulator.

An improvement to audio is to remove the 0.05 uF cap across the 2.2 Meg resistor in the first 12AU7 stage and use a rolloff circuit on the cathode of the second stage 12AU7.
