Rufus P Turner was a rather prolific African American electronics writer.  Here is a "Super Mod" rig from 1949.  If this topic is of interest, check out Mike Villard's article in the December 1950 issue of QST.  Mike really cuts to the chase.

Think I'd go with this one and keep the AM line HV doubler for 250 Volts. You wouldn't get the full scrote that Tom had with 450 volts, but would be easy build.

So the filaments would be supplied by two sets of parallel lines right off the AC line with the extra 20 volts each soaked up by speech amp and Osc/driver stages.

A real classic.

I mean if your going to use 50C5's why not go full power-transformerless in keeping with the cool intent.

70L7's are also nice for mains operated filaments.
