Actually, I ordered a $5 shunt from China.  Quick and easy...

Ok, long story:  I experimented with the output network because the FET was getting too warm after 1 minute of carrier.  I then removed the 2nd turn from the 1:2 output core, and made it 1:1.  The output power dropped in half to 25 watts and the FET did run cooler because it had to absorb less power.  However, the output core got REALLY hot!  Either way, power is being lost in a big way.

So...  I looked again at my working 40 meter single FET AM transmitter.  The gate is driven by a rice box and is actually not driven into saturation.  I looked at the gate waveform and it operates in the linear region.  It has a sine wave that has a +5 volt peak.  That means that it isn't class D and is probably more like class C.  However, it generates very little heat and works!  I'm going to make my 75 meter rig the same way.
