The 2015 AM Transmitter Rally (AMTR) saw the lowest participation since its launch in 2010, with only 18 logs submitted this year.  However, those logs reflect at least 182 stations active in the AMTR for a total of 318 AM QSOs.

Top AMTR scores for 2015 are KC4VWU, KC8ZUL, K8JLY, W1E, W1AEX, and N8SDR. The 2015 AMTR results and logs analysis are shown below.  No stations outside the U.S. appear in any of the logs received, and all logged QSOs occurred only on 75, 40 & 10 meters. Special event call signs active during the AMTR were K4K (op Jerry WA4JK) W1E (op Steve WA1QIX), and  W1G (op Kevin KB2WIG).  Several Apache Labs & Flex transceivers were logged during the rally, as well as Class-D & Class-E transmitters.  While the number of SDR and solid state rigs on AM and in the AMTR continues to grow, the 2015 rally was dominated by vintage vacuum tube transmitters.  A 2015 AMTR newsletter is attached to this post (below).

For those of you who used the hard copy Summary Sheet, the initial version included a mistake in the score calculation grid, which was my error.  All scores submitted with a summary sheet were calculated correctly by both the master AMTR logging program and double-checked by hand.

A big thank you to all stations who submitted logs, to the many stations who were active during AMTR, the special event operators, and to Steve WA1QIX, who entered hard copy logs into the AMTR software and ran the numbers, to Steve K4HX of AMfone.net, and Ray NØDMS for mentioning the rally in Electric Radio magazine.

Your feedback about this event and the logging software are welcome & encouraged. Please post here or contact me direct.

Brad K4RT
2015 AMTR coordinator

Johnson Viking Five Hundred

« Reply #1 on: March 15, 2015, 10:27:38 AM »

Thanks guys for the hard work logging and posting.

I saw a comment from the newsletter and I paraphrase: too many high power stations not listening for the little guys.

This brought a chuckle as our 40M AM group had this discussion awhile ago and and a fellow ham commented the guys running low power were "Girly Modulation" which I commented several of us run "Johnson Modulation" (referring to Five Hundred) then another ham sarcastically said "The bigger your J...... Is the more you play with it."
Well the girly modulation stuck so now when we have trouble copying a station due to conditions or ...... He must be running girly modulation. Hi hi

Hmmm.. well, I don't know if the comment about the "big guns" on 3885, et al not listening for low power stations is universally applicable   Wink

I was operating the event and was on 3885 both nights and with high power (SUCH a surprise  Grin  ) and with a bunch of other guys, some of whom were also running some fairly healthy power.  I can say if someone called in, we ALL stood by and made every effort to include and work these stations.

A number of the stations calling in were running LOW power and we all worked them (even though copy was sometimes very compromised).

This an excerpt from my AMTR log:

21:39   KX3K running an Eico 720
22:43   KJ4YEV running a *BAREFOOT* DX-60 ! (talk about low power)
23:13   NY4NC running a barefoot Icom Pro 2
23:44   KC4IPX running a barefoot TS-430 at 25 watts
00:05   WA4FTY running a Harvey Wells TBS-50

Anyway,

In general I thought the event was really fun.  I think with better publicity and enough lead time, we can make it a lot bigger.

The 2nd year of the event, we did get 43 logs submitted, but there was a LOT of publicity that year, and almost everyone used the logging software, so there wasn't too much manual intervention involved.  There were more than 1200 contacts, so imagine trying to type all of that in  Tongue

If we can get it published in QST, that would probably help a lot.  Also, I *think* the 2nd year event was co-incident with the AWA QSO party, and the combination gave BOTH events a whole lot more contacts  Cheesy

I was listening for a while. There was a definite "we aren't doing the Rally" vibe on one frequency. That's OK. No one is compelled to participate. But we should also recognize this sort of attitude WILL run off some. Let's not put our heads in the sand.

Personally, I never put much value in what they say anyway, so no surprise there!

Its nice to have choices within our hobby and to each there own.  For me, I enjoyed meeting some new AM'ers and these events do tend to bring awareness of the AM mode and all of the comments I heard were generally very good.

It was a very busy weekend at our house but I tried to get on when I could to hand out some Q's. I made contacts on 3705, 3725, 3733, 3875, 3880, 3885, one on 3890, 7290/95, 21.420, 21,430, and 29.030. I stayed on 29.03 for about an hour talking with the guys Seattle Saturday afternoon.

Real fun time. Thanks!

I haven't been doing AM all that long roughly 7-8 months
But I can say without a doubt I personally have more fun and more enjoyment on AM then any other mode I have used-
That being SSB, some CW and just about any digital mode you can think of.

Now I haven't yet resurrected an old boat anchor or other piece of heavy metal but diffidently have the urge to do so soon, after I finish up a few other builds I have started.

I have participated in many contest and wish I could have spent more time with the AM Rally,  as I found it too be a very relaxing time, that offered me a chance to learn and hear more of some really great older to more modern rigs and definitely much more courteous operators!

I have a feeling if the weather would have been better for much of the Midwest and east coast there would have been much more participation.

I know that is right!  I had every intention to participate the entire weekend.  But I was snowed in up in Lynchburg, Virginia.  If I knew that would happen, I would have taken the rig with me.  Lots of tall trees, I could have had a great antenna.  Maybe next year!

Just wondering, might it be possible to have the rally more than once a year?  With all the positive feedback regarding the event, the question is whether the effort to arrange and organize it would be excessive if done more often???
