I have an FT-DX3000, Alpha 8410 and I am playing around with AM.  When I go to remote tuners and listen to my signal the audio level sounds very low on AM (but perfect on SSB).  It sounds like it is "in the carrier" if this makes sense??  I am seeing the modulation - for example, I am putting out 350 watts (with no talking) and when I talk the output power varies with peaks of 700 watts with my voice.  Any ideas on what settings need to be difference when transmitting on AM vs SSB?

So it sounds like you're only getting 50% modulation. Might very well be the ALC doing it.  I'm not that familiar with your rig but it would be something to look into.  There is a simple mod for ICOMs that use a 9 volt battery to fool the ALC that is said to work on other brands too.  Maybe there is something in your rigs menus to adjust ALC.

See page 62 of the FTdx3000 operating manual for initial AM settings. The "ALC" issue, mentioned in the previous post, is a front panel adjustment. Also review "Enhancing Signal Transmit Quality" section starting on page 66 for adjusting the equalizer properly. The MONI button is very useful with headphones to set up your audio on AM or SSB.
