Eerie...almost full quieting! AURORAL EFFECT?

<------------see avatar pic of S-meter (unless I changed it to something else). It's accurate!

0545 UTC. WB3HUZ is 5 and 9. Hears K6JEK (it figures!)

0500 UTC. In QSO w/WA6JUS and "Big Mamu".

(Called 5 or 6 times, but NO CONTACT. I am doing something wrong  low-slung dipole and 200 watts of carrier....)

Oops... Exactly when I disassembled a power supply of my receiver to solder the PCB... Sad

Congratulations, guys!

Had a nice little run on some AM DX this evening/morning. Tom K1JJ got it started on 3890 kHz. By the time I arrived around 1145 PM ET and signing at 1245 AM ET or so, I worked the following stations.

W6RQD - Roland - Victorville, CA
 - low power, 20 watts!

WA6JUS - John, San Diego, CA
 - (2) 4-250 modulated by (2) 810s. 5/9+20. Biggest signal from 6-land tonight

K6JEK - John -  Sunnyvale, CA
 - Class E RF/Class H modulator

KO6NM - Mike -  Woodland Hills, CA
 - Big signal, as usual. NI6Q-Brian also on the mic

W0DON - Don - Greely, CO
 - 40watts from an Elmac AF-67!

W2QXR - Ollie - Atlanta, GA

W6PSS - Dave -  Ramona, CA     5/9+5

WB5UGT - Steve - Nr Houston, TX
 - 10 watts to a vertical dipole

KC2DMC - Dave - Catskill, NY

on 3885 - NA7RH - Bob - Scottsdale, AZ
 - Homebrew TX 6DQ5 final

KH6JS - Hiram - Wakikki, HI
 - running Old Betsy

Lots of fun. Hope to do it a few more times over the winter! Missed KNX and W7QHO. Maybe next time.

Hey Joe:

I thought I heard another station in there a few times. Never got a call. Maybe it was you.

Too bad Roy/MisterQuincyAdams didn't check in.  I'm sure he was listening though.

Hi Joe!

Tnx for the report and S meter visual out there in CA.

I was thinking about why we didn't hear you and am still wondering.  By any chance were you on the wrong antenna?   I've done that enuff times...

When did you call in?  Early on it was quite difficult to hear the west coast.  I also noticed cornditions were down maybe 5-10db from normal becuz of solar flares. My beverage was acting very poorly compared to the Yagi, so I cudn't use it most of the time.

I also noticed big gun Mike/KO6NM was down from his normal strength quite a bit whereas, Roland/W6RQD said he was running a barefoot TS-940 at 20w with an inverted V on the roof... he was S9+15.  STRANGE cornditions for sure and probably selective.

I cud barely hear the HUZman in VA while we worked you guys and a coupla locals later said they tried to break in but were not heard at all here.

Let's make a sked the next time the band opens and we'll listen for you. The last few years you made the trip easily, so I'm curious now.  [I can hear a pin drop in LA wid my MoonRaker most of the time, caw mawn]

Later -

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

After your report Steve I in hurry put 1 kOhm resistor instead of 100 KOhm and as the result burned transistor, couple of resistors, Zener and FET.... So, I assume it was the fortune to miss the agenda.

Ah my old stomping ground. I wonder if there is still a surplus place
on San Fernando. I was there a couple years ago and see the area is a lot
nicer now.

Oh, you better believe QRN is high here. It's Buzz-Alley. But the last couple of nights were real quiet.

And yes, APEX ELECTRONIC SURPLUS is still going strong. Was in there a couple of weeks ago, in the back room where they keep all the tubes. NOS on the shelf. Most tubes are between $5 and $3 depending on their mood...

The lack of web and internet presence from So. California AMers makes it seem like they don't exist, or in too few numbers to matter. Truth is, most of these guys don't even do email. But there are 60-100 active stations, with a hard core of about 20 "serious practitioners".

Course, most nights there is little AM activity in So Cal - as compared to E. Coast - where the AM window is busy every day and night until nearly dawn. But many people out here do listen. All they need is provocation and a reason to fire up the filaments.

You BIG GUNS in the East might try calling CQ WEST COAST on 3870 between midnight and 1AM (9 and 10PM PST), saying you're "listening on 3900" (or whatever freq. is clear in your location). I'm sure you'll generate a stampede of contacts.

Ah Apex, I used to go there all the time. There was also an electronics store around the corner that I used to visit just around the corner from hollywood way.  We used to go to lunch at pinoichio's down town.

That would be ELECTRONIC CITY, catering mostly to recording studio techs, but good for caps, resistors, etc in a pinch.

Burbank was an interesting town back in the early '80s. One end of town the unreal movie lots the other end where unreal airplanes were taught to fly by the master.

Surplus places are great. When I lived in TAXACHUSETTS I used to go to MESHNA occasionally. And TUFTS RADIO was the HRO of it's day.

Here's a couple pics that don't do APEX justice. One is the famous outdoor junk yard. The other is just a PORTION of ONE of it's dozens and dozens of packed-to-the-rafters aisles!

By the way, I heard now well some conversations on 3891 among ducks,  while working on an active loop design. I wish it be already done... I want to use a copper pipe turn 1 meter diameter and 12AT7 tube in cascode connection. Plate coil will depend on what inductivity I get from the loop.
By the way, can somebody explain to the noivice, what ducks are doing on the band, or it is not the AM only band?
