I had this D22 for years sitting around looking pretty in its original box. Its all original with the impedance set to high. So I wired it up for my Ranger and it doesn't sound as good as my D-104 321 crystal element. So I found this Sure Brothers equalizer and the price was right. I wired it up and it was determined the D22 needs a microphone preamp. I borrowed a Radio Shack one from wd7f and it works but......
So I made an adapter for the D22 to fit the base of the D-104. So in my search to build a preamp I found w2aew youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLbB4XUS0lM with his preamp and equalizer. His build is here, http://www.qsl.net/w2aew/myd104amp.html
I thought if I could tailor this for the D22 and the D-104 base using the PTT with the Ranger on AM it would be nice.
Thoughts ...comments?

By George I think I got it. I used my R390A without an antenna, diode load into computer and used Cool Edit 2000 to record audio with Ranger into a dummy load. I first adjusted the gain and audio levels by recording and playing back the audio. Cool Edit lets you see the waveform. I had all the other trim levels in the "0" position. I recorded and played back until my audio looked good and sounded like me. Worked very well. I then tried the D-104 MC-321 directly into Ranger and recorded. What a difference. Same with the MC-320. Looks like in my humble opinion the D22 is a keeper and has better audio balance with the Sure SR107.
Now its time to build a preamp....
