CW is just a narrower version of AM

Spent some time on 10 this morning. 18 contacts, 9 countries.

Having fun. Several said they have just discovered AM on amateur bands : )

For the last hour or so I worked a group of stations in a roundtable at 3903 KHz.  Most of them gone now but they were really strong and conditions were very good in the southeast.  Several said they were aware of the rally but were just into rag chewing this evening.   I will try again after some dinner.

Trying to get AM'ers into contesting mode is like herding cats....

I'd do it in real contest style BUT I that wouild destroy the spirit of AM Rally, being a mellow intended operation I suspect.  But when prizes are offered, competitive impulses arise. Testosterone, for those that still have any left may rule!  {:>).  This will be interesting...

Didn't get the sense there was any AM competitive impulses on any band. Finally went and played in the Virginia QSO party for an hour or so to amuse myself.

I worked W1AW/7 Arizona.  What's up with that??  How would W1AW be operating portable 7 from Arizona?  The station was 75M 3885khz.

75/80 other then the regular morning group and a bit of testing was dead. I was reworking a transceiver modulator so spent quite a bit of time checking the band out between burst of soldering. Pretty well nothing all afternoon. And yet the band was open because what I did hear(some testing) had good signals.

I heard W1AW/7, the fellow running the station explained that this being the 100th anniversary of the ARRL that the call was being handed off one at a time to each state to run a station and if you work all 50 stations you can get a certificate. I belive I heard him on 20 meters.

Brendan- You were booming into northern Virginia last night on 75 meters. Another station in Alabama also quite strong here.  What antenna were you using?

I got on 20M AM last night around sunset, at 14,330. After 30 minutes of CQ, I had one SSB station come back. Later I got an SWL email from Brandon who heard me well at his QTH. The conditions were good, and my "Johnny Cash" station was heating up the coax well. Not an AM station on the band.... :-(

Well, it is described as a contest and has prizes awarded, so you know what that means. It means someone will "win". Go for it! Ralphie will give you a run for your money. Can't comment on his testosterone levels, but he's a pretty competitive cuss in events like this.

I've never been a corntester, so it's hard to get inspired. Need to install another baby gate today then I might wander onto 40m to see what's going on. Or 10. Or not. Just finishing my morning coffee now, while the wimmins are gone shopping. Mmm......quiet.......  Wink

I fired up the rig around 10 PM Eastern last night and listened on 160, 80 and 40 and other than something up in the ghetto, I did not hear any AM activity.

Fred

There were several of us here in the Northeast that worked him on 3885 AM last night. Last week many of us worked W1AW/7 from Washington on 15 and 10 meters AM.

For more info on W1AW/whatever, go here: http://www.arrl.org/centennial-qso-party

If you took the time to click the ARRL link and read, you would know.
Anyway, here's the W1AW/7 schedule which was a two second Google click away.

Thanks to Steve WA1QIX and AMfone for sponsoring the transmitter rally. I made a handful of contacts on 75 & 40 meters. Looking forward to next time.

Wasn't that contest last month?

Boy have YOU been busy with that new child in your life  Grin

The contest is *THIS WEEKEND* (March 15th and 16th).

Oh, and the first prize is going to a real nice custom made wood framed wall clock with YOUR CALLSIGN (or callsigns if you use a special events call during the event), the year you won, etc. etc.

Beware, I think Ralph 'GL is gunning for 1st place!!

Well, it could not have been scheduled on a worse weekend for me.  I was unable to participate.   Ralph certainly didn't have any competition from me!  Wouldn't you know, after winning two years in a row,  I was unable to be on when trophies were being offered.  :-(  Hope everyone had a good time and made lots of AM contacts.

Hi Jack,

Yeah, I was wondering why we didn't hear you on!

Having the Rally in March was somewhat of an experiment, but I think it's better held in January or not too far into February.  I missed most of Sunday because I went to a flea market and didn't get back on until Sunday evening for a while.
