240V Variac on 120V ?

Is is feasible to use a 240V Variac on 120V?   If so would this impact the current rating?

  I'd add though that any variac designed to buck or boost the incoming AC line has the best load regulation at the 'DOT' where it neither bucks or boosts. A 240V variac on 120V input will have reduced flux in the core, and although I'm not sure about this, I'd bet the regulation, or waveform distortion would be degraded using the 240V variac on half voltage.

I need  a 120V 10 amp "behind the panel" mounting style, the only one I have is a surface mount rear lug type.  I have 240V W10H Gen Rad that I was thinking of pressing into service

Sorry Jack...all I have are a 4.5A, 7.5A, and 8.5A Variac. Only the 4.5A has a dial plate, and knob.

I have a dual 120V 28A one available if you have the space. It's much bigger physically than a 10A. on the other hand, it's big enough to justify a handwheel.

Most GR Variacs can be made to mount any way you need.  Shafts can be made to protrude either side.  Post a picture of the one you have.
