Thanks to Jack for prodding me along a bit - here are the results of the 2013 AM transmitter rally.  Participation was down this year as compared to previous years.  Is this due to poor publicity, possibly picking the wrong date (I think this had a lot to do with it), or should we skip a year between events?

Congratulations to our overall winner and winner in category C (military xmtr), Jack W9GT, who really made an outstanding showing!!!  Head, shoulders are a bit more over everyone else.  Outstanding work  :)

Congratulations to our winners in each individual category.  It's nice to break things out by category to highlight various types/classes of transmitters and equipment in general.

I had to break the results in to 2 posts because they are long.  The comments are fun to read, and all of the various rigs in use, tube types, etc. are interesting.  More people from Texas were logged this year than any other state.  That's quite a switch from previous years!!  Shows AM is not a regional mode.

Ok enough preamble - here are the results:

Hi Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to post the summary.  Its always enjoyable for me to look at the diversity of rigs that are used.

I believe this even was the same time as another AM event, possible the AWA AM QSO party.   I do believe that having multiple AM events at the same time is not the best practice.  I did operate the AWA QSO party and it very popular event with good participation.

See you at NEAR Fest.

Hi Joe,

I'm trying to remember, but I believe the event this past year was not on the same weekend as the AWA AM QSO party, and that I perceive was not necessarily good.  I seem to recall that the previous year's event coincided with the AWA QSO party, and there were a lot of AM stations on the air because of the two events and probably folks made contacts in both events at the same time!!

If most folks are like me, I have limited time to operate big events, where possibly an entire weekend is involved, so I would have to choose either one or the other.

For instance, in 2012 W3GMS showed up in the logs of 7 participants.  This year, you don't show up at all  Wink

There's probably something to be said for synergy, where the two events bring out a larger critical mass then either event on its own, and very likely more operators in total than the sum of the participants from the events held on different weekends.  Certainly the past couple of year's logs support this hypothesis.

Interesting to say the least!

Thanks Steve for posting! I particularly liked seeing guys in the contest running their HB rigs. I went to Google and selected Images, then typed in their call signs and quite often pictures of their rigs came up.

It would be great if more people posted their rigs on line somewhere so that a scan would come up with something Grin Grin

CQ CQ CONTEST

« Reply #5 on: October 07, 2013, 04:56:59 PM »

The AWA and the Classic Exchange contests were the week before. The ARRL International DX (CW) contest was also the weekend of the rally. Other then that, there wasn't any other significant contest.

Offering prizes, certificates, or other gratuities might perk up the attendance. Contests, in whatever form you call them, should be a "slam-bang-thank you madam" activity. At least to me, having to chit-chat with each contact in order to make a point, tends to slow me down, and, after a time, less interested. Shaving the time down to one 24 hour period might also work.

Steve,

Oh, now I remember.  My BD was Feb 21 and we went down to the shore the weekend of the Rally so I was not home.

Thanks Steve!  I know it is a thankless job to organize and manage this activity.  I appreciate having the opportunity to participate, however, I would guess that there may have been several others that did very well and just didn't submit logs.  Anyway, it was fun and I hope that it continues.

I agree with Pete (for once  Shocked) that it would be nice to have some sort of certificates or some form of recognition for those who participate and/or win in their categories.
We keep dancing around the term "contest", avoiding that term, largely due to the poor reputation of many contests and the fact that some AMers have been quite outspoken here and elsewhere in their expression of dislike for them.  It seems that the bands get totally clobbered by some of the large events to the detriment of those who just enjoy rag chewing.  I suppose that is the main reason for encouragement of a longer exchange and "true QSOs" in this or other AM-oriented activities.

No specific submissions this year, but several stations worked using class D.  I guess these commercial transmitters would fall into category G - at least the way things are set up now.

Following up on Jack's post (which I printed and saved  Cheesy), here's a thought on certificates for winners in a category and certificates for participants who submitted a log. Participants who submitted a log get a hand-crafted black/white certificate in PDF form acknowledging their participation.  Winners in a particular category will get a hand-crafted full color certificate mailed to them through USPS. My super spiffy high resolution color laser printer can print on a wide variety of paper stock.  I'll even pick up the USPS mailing charges and each winner will get one of my discount coupons good for an entire year. Obviously someone will have to design a certificate and the necessary wording to commemorate the event for the participants and winners.

It might not be much but at least participants now have a goal, recognition of their log submission participation, and maybe some paper to frame on the wall.

Excellent report, Steve. It gives a good view of the different aspects of operation from equipment, call area, etc.

As to participation being down, I think the yearly drama involved with settling on a date and announcing it along with the date change probably added to it a bit. Numerous people asked: Is the AM Transmitter Rally taking place this year? Is Steve going to announce it soon? Is it going to be the same weekend? Is it going to be a different weekend?

(Then later of course comes '[when] Is he going to publish the results?')

Add to that the combination of polling people as to when to have it, along with numerous ideas or attempts to 'combine' it with other events; first the Heavy Metal Rally, then this year running it the same weekend as the Classic CX. Makes for a lot of unnecessary confusion for something that's supposed to be a fun pastime.

It should be really simple: same weekend every year, announce it a couple weeks or month before online, send a notice to Ray at Electric Radio, end of story. IIRC, you eventually got the rules & regs solidified which is the difficult part. No need to make the easy stuff difficult.

In the past I operated from Steve/HX's place after the Richmond FrostFest the first weekend of February. This year the date was changed, but our new arrival here made it a moot point anyway.

Overall I think it's become a pretty successful event. And any event that gets more AMers on the air with a wide variety of cool gear to work and hear is a good thing in my book. Pete's suggestion would be a nice little bonus.

I like this !!!!  And truly appreciate any help in running/organizing the event.  I'm real good with writing the logging software and the server process to handle log uploads, along with doing the data reduction, etc. but other aspects are better handled by those who are more organized  Wink  Bringing the different skillsets together will make things much better!

Steve, thank you for posting the results, breakdowns, and comments.

I agree with Todd's suggestion that the AMR be held the same weekend every year, but suggest that it be announced at least 3 months in advance (AMFone, ER, AMRadio, etc) to allow ample time to get the word out and to plan being available that day/weekend.  I also suggest NOT skipping a year.

I would be glad to help with publicity if you need it. I have handled publicity for another on air event for several years.

Since we are giving comments and opinions, please do not schedule it when another AM event is happening.  I also agree with it being the same weekend each year and yearly is a good thing.  We do not have to grow ratings each year, so if some years are not as active, so what.  Folks sometimes just have schedule conflicts.

Thanks for all your work with this project Steve. I'm not an avid contester but I do enjoy this one as it brings a lot of guys out of the woodwork. As previously mentioned in the thread, it's always fun to hear about what the other guy is running and to see their setups on QRZ or with a google image search. The most fun of all is tuning around and listening to operators who usually never run AM as they press the AM button on their "Disco Duck" transceiver for the very first time and give it a try.

Nicely done,

Hi Joe,

The AWA event and Classic exchange were on the same weekend and that didn't seem to be a problem.  Is there some agreement between those two groups about their events?

January seems to be a good month - not much happening, no vacations to worry about, etc. And good propagation for sure!!!!

Let me know if you know about the AWA and CX events being on the same weekend.

Thanks and Regards,

Steve

Some "not-so-serious" certificates should be added to the mix just to add to the fun.

One of aspects I enjoy about the AM transmitter rally is the minor chit-chat. This "slam-bang-thank you madam" type contesting is not reminiscent of the earlier days of AM dominated ham radio at least for me. I become less interested in this "your 59 but I cant copy you well" stuff.  Roll Eyes Its so superficial. One time I gave out a 479 in a contest and the other station actually laughed at me which goes to show how some folks are. This should be a fun activity, not a bare bones, Q-count per hour driven activity. There, I feel better now.  Smiley

I look forward to working you this year during the Rally !  Any big rigs in the immediate offing?  I seem to remember something about a Collins 21E (talk about a BIG rig!), but I might be wrong.
