"Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of headphones. You sure you got today's codes?"

A bunch of our Navy radio and sonar gear had the next best thing...the "Battle short" switch, which bypassed all the fuzes and protection circuits for the times when it HAS to work.

The stuff I worked on in the sixties did. One goofus decided to check the connectivity to the thermite self destruct feature with an ohmeter. Bad choice!

Yep.  Thermite is nasty stuff.  Works good for what it is designed to do, though. Even the smoke from it is nasty.

Ref battle short:  At least your equipment had all the protection there when it was installed.  One of the most left out pieces of equipment in Army installations, at least on the mobile tactical level, was the spike protection circuits for the vehicle DC primary input.  It was not included in the basic installation kits, therefore it was not used.  For those installations where protection was used, it was like your:  able to be bypassed 'just in case'.

Ah jeez Philip, this is one of my favorite movies.

Some more quotes from Major Kong (downloaded from imdb.com)

Well, boys, I reckon this is it - nuclear combat toe to toe with the Roosskies. Now look, boys, I ain't much of a hand at makin' speeches, but I got a pretty fair idea that something doggone important is goin' on back there. And I got a fair idea the kinda personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin'. Heck, I reckon you wouldn't even be human bein's if you didn't have some pretty strong personal feelin's about nuclear combat. I want you to remember one thing, the folks back home is a-countin' on you and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or your creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump - we got some flyin' to do.

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

FB stuff!

Empire of the Air

Dr. Strangelove

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

When Worlds Collide (has a pair of neato Hallicrafters receivers in it)

War of the Worlds (original)

Kind Hearts and Coronets

There is no other version worth watching. All of the others are just imitators.

Actually, the remake of the Thing is actually closer to the story than the original. Both films have their merits. Mars Attacks is a good film, but its almost TOO silly.

I love the rouge hand/arm....

The Day The Earth Stood Still  (The original 1951) is and always has been one of my favorites of all time. In fact I just watched it the other night.

The original Day the Earth Stood Still has Dr. Hoffman playing his theremin. Peter Pringle now owns this particularly fine RCA antique..

That was the first movie my brother and I ever saw. I was seven years old and my brother 4 when our grandmother took us to see it. It made a lasting impression. It would probably be termed cruelty to children or bullying if that were to happen today!

I don't remember the first time I saw it. But I know it's been my favorite ever since. I can't count how many times I've sat and watched it. I really wish I could memorize all of Klaatu's speech at the end but my brain just won't let me. Sad

You think that the original was torture, try to sit through the 2006 version. It's unbelievable how much they've bastardized the original. Two totally separate movies. I'm glad I didn't waste any money on the remake.
