Well, when the bands are dead, and even k4kyv isn't on, there is always someone to listen to.

I have noticed that even though the bands seem dead, there have been some 2's and 3's coming into here in South Arkansas.  So, maybe the bands are dead from no one being on rather than solely from poor propagation.  I've called CQ several times, but with no results.

" the bands are dead from no one being on "

Yea ahh, I think you hit it good. Since my 80m rigs are not doing 'it', I've listened a lot on 40m.  Dead air from about 7270-7300 for a lot of the day into the early evening. After R China drops out, 7290 has been dead quiet. Same for 29.0 - although the 28.00 beacon band is active, there's a lot of time when 10m is dead. For what its worth, there have been several times I've copied one hop stuff for several hours during the overnight hours. One, two even three AM. So there is propagation, just not a lot of activity.

We need several of K4KYV "CQ " machines set to run in the shack.

I'm awake, but the wife hears real well when I'm in the shack, so that is that.

I actually had a setup like that in use here at one time. I recorded a couple of different CQs onto a CD player and had it set up that I could play that through my transmitter, monitor it on one receiver and when it hit a pause in the loop, pause the player, unkey the transmitter and listen, and if I didn't hear anything, start it back up again.
