Just saw the first lightning bug of the summer while out with the dogs for their nightly business.

Little firefly almost landed on my hand.  Must be a scout because I didn't see any others.

Always a cool symbol of summer for me.

Hey Paul,

I saw my first firefly tonight, too, while out shooting baskets at dusk. I saw only one.

So, I guess the first two posts begs the question. Did Paul and Brad see the same firefly?

Probably not. Wink I'm in Virginia about a mile north of Ft. Belvoir.

When I was a kid, I remember, we also called them lightning bugs. We'd try and catch one, in the dark, by watching for it to light-up and predict its flight path. Once you got the "lead" on it correct, you could cup your hands to capture it. A rather crude autopsy would follow to examine their glowy stuff on the picnic table.

Ahh, those carefree days of youth! How I yern for them! The energy, the enthusiasm, the wonder of all things, the glowing bug guts on the table. I can feel a tear welling up just now... oh, be still my sentimental heart!

Nah, go ahead and feel all that.  It's good for you.

That comes over me more and more often these days, probably because the layers and layers of good times & memories are worth exploring in the mind's eye.

Replenishes the memory core to tap those nodes, I'm convinced.

That SOB flew all the way down to Oregon where I was last week and bit me. She was flying an Alaskan flag and leaking oil just like a DC-3.

I saw one tonight. It was big, was blinking, had wheels, and was looking for a landing strip.

What ever happened to DDT ??!!  Shocked

What is DDT:
Prior to 1972 when its use was banned, DDT was a commonly used pesticide. Although it is no longer used or produced in the United States, we continue to find DDT in our environment. Other parts of the world continue to use DDT in agricultural practices and in disease-control programs. Therefore, atmospheric deposition is the current source of new DDT contamination in our Great Lakes. DDT, and its break-down products DDE and DDD, are persistent, bioacculumative, and toxic (PBT) pollutants target by EPA.

Concerns About DDT:
Even though DDT has been banned since 1972, it can take more than 15 years to break down in our environment. Fish consumption advisories are in effect for DDT in many waterways including the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Harmful effects DDT can have on us:
    Probable human carcinogen
    Damages the liver
    Temporarily damages the nervous system
    Reduces reproductive success
    Can cause liver cancer
    Damages reproductive system

Bunch out here in northern wv last night. Late this year. Yeah, I still call them lightning bugs.  Peak should be over the next couple of weeks.

Put holes in jar lid for air, throw in some grass with them and put in refrigerator every day; we kids used to have a nightlight for a few days.

My older sister would cut off the abdomen in the act of lighting and plaster it on her forehead. Good for minutes as the glow slowly faded. ...the original chemical sticks.  All the girls did that.  Said they were "Indian princesses."
