Oh well! I guess it happens. Finally decided last weekend to get rolling on the RCA BTA-500R transmitter I acquired a little over 2 years ago. Started on it last Friday... all the conversion work had already been nicely done by W4AEE,  so it was just routine stuff putting the iron back in and checking all the wiring connections, checking all the stages one at a time, etc.etc. Today, after replacing an open resistor in the plate OVL circuit (I caused that Grin Grin), I finally lit it up with audio drive. All went fairly well until I gave the audio just a slight increase and noticed a little bit of blue in one of the mod outpoots and snap, bang, shutdown and the mains breaker tripped. Bummer! Angry Angry Replaced the tube with a good one from one of my GK-500's, lit it back up and same thing, except the replacement tube wasn't gassy like the first.  Huh Well, after a little checking, I found the problem in the pics below. I guess I'm heading to the "Wanted Forum" on this one.  Sad

That's my story and I'm stuck with it...

One reason I never liked potted xfmrs.  You might be able to fix the insulator with some type of glue or insulating compound.

more inpoot often yields more outpoot

it makes you wonder how many hv transformers / inductors have been lost due to unglazed porcelan (steatite) insulators ... I know of at least 2 different ones .... the unglazed steatite is hydroscopic (sp?)
