What mike are you using now? Is it a stock Apache? If so, have you followed the procedure for adjusting the audio gain control behind the key jack. On the stock Apache, the front panel gain control really is a clipper gain adjustment. I've had my Apache since almost birth and never required any processor or equalizer. A D-104 works well with the Apache although I prefer the more mellow EV 664. If someone has diddled with the audio section, it may require investigation.

Check out the APHEX 230 processor. The all in one  swiss army knife of processors. One box does it all. Microphones  the  AKG C4500 B-BC
