Doug,

I was concerned about station shutdown also with my remote station.  It's handled a couple of ways in my station. The Kenwood TS-480 has a built in time out timer which is set for 3 minutes at my station. The Remoterig internet interface has a heartbeat function of sorts that shuts down the radio if it loses communication with the remote end for more that a minute.
As a backup for this I have a four channel telephone remote control that allows me to shut the whole station power off and reboot the router if needed. The remote control board by N8LP has a time out timer also that detects your carrier and will operate a power relay if it's keyed for longer than the set time. This unit also reads the frequency and that is displayed remotely.
The antenna is disconnected and grounded via a beefy relay whenever the radio isn't on. Not much good against a lightning hit but that's not common in the winter in upstate NY.

I have full SWR metering via the radio and also with a Heathkit meter who's output is buffered and fed into my remote control board a to d input.

I wouldn't remote any of my tube type gear...that would be asking for trouble!
